The RUB was the first university to be founded in the Federal Republic in 1962. The university was established outside the city as a campus university in Querenburg: with the exception of a few outposts, all 21 faculties are housed on the university grounds. The university, the residential town of Hustadt and the Uni-Center shopping center that serves both have dominated the district ever since. Teaching began in 1965, three years after the RUB was founded, with a ceremonial opening with Prime Minister Franz Meyers.

Die Halde Haniel in Bottrop ist mit 159 m Höhe (184,9 m über Normalnull) eine der höchsten Halden des Ruhrgebiets. Aufgetürmt wurde sie in Form zweier Spiralen durch Abraum der Steinkohlezeche Prosper-Haniel.
2002 installierte der baskische Künstler Augustin Ibarrola 100 bemalte Bahnschwellen, die "Totems", auf der Halde, um die "scheinbaren Gegensätze von Industrieraum und Natur" zusammenzuführen.

In 2002, the Basque artist Augustin Ibarrola installed 100 painted railway sleepers, the "totems", on the heap in order to bring together the "apparent contrasts of industrial space and nature".
The Hansa coking plant is one of 17 central coking plants that were built in the Ruhr area in the 1920s. The task of the plant was to produce coke from coal, which is required for steel smelting. At the time, it was one of the largest and most modern coking plants in Europe.
