Grain Parade

One of almost half a dozen grain trains to run the Atlanta North District yesterday was a visitor to the line NS 54W. Here the train is following NS 44R on its way to Atlanta.

90s Feelings

With a feel of 90s or early '00 intermodal, NS i04 struggles up the northern slope of Braswell Mountain behind a veteran EMD leader.

Last Light

NS 734's DPUs shove hard on the loaded coal train as two Macs provide the muscle to keep the coal moving.

A Good One

One of the trains, due to its profile that was good for random, stupid, or unusual power in 2016 was Norfolk Southern train 298. This day the short intermodal autorack combination train was lead by one of NS's SD70s that has since been retired from the roster.

Old Stead

Norfolk Southern 10x, a special move of 50 foot boxcars to Macon, Georgia to be put in service for Georgia Pacific. Lead by a solo GE D9-40C the train passes through CP Green on Atlanta North District.

More Shiny

NS 733 had another pair of the H4 new ES44ACHs as DPUs.

Chasing Light by Travis W. Newman

Chasing Light

Nothing as fleeting as sunlight on a "partly cloudy" day, but you take what you get and make it work. NS 367 chases the sun as the manifest makes it way toward downtown Aragon, Georgia behind a solo AC44C6M.

One Less by Travis W. Newman

One Less

NS 152 sprints north on a deserted North End District with NS 8102 leading a gaggle of GE motors northbound. He meet the NS 29F at Oak and I don't think he saw another train until near Dalton.

The 8102 is now one less heritage that I don't have a night shot of. Only .... way to many to go.

Quite The Pair

NS 732 is back on the move south at CP Green on the Atlanta North District behind a BNSF 25th Anniversary GE and a Montana RailLink SD70ACe. This train was quite popular on a fairly busy Sunday afternoon.

Sonic TOFC

With the class AC44C6M leading the train and a solid cut of trailers on flat cars (TOFC) on the headend, a very nice NS 26C darts up the side of Braswell Mountain on an overcast January afternoon.

A Bearded Catfish

With snow on the plow, evidence of its journey south down the CNO&TP, NS 219 powers into Dallas, Georgia behind C44-9W 9880, one of a shrinking number of units that had the somewhat popular nickname of 'catfish' in certain circles.

Almost

This close, but oh well, when you don't pay attention to shutter speed you can pay for it.

Not a horrible shot but its my first (and only) shot of Norfolk Southern's 21st heritage unit for the Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia Railway, know as the TAG.

Faded History

A non horse head C44-9W, once ubiquitous on the Norfolk Southern system, have become a thing of the past here in 2024. Here NS 9678 leads the 18E, mostly empty racks from Jacksonville, Florida, north through the hills of Polk County on the way to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Sliver Streaks

Not a Gene Wilder film, but NS 189 does make the racks fly by in streaks of silver as the crew is told they own the railroad all the way to Hiram and the terminal. The two GEs, one on the head end and another mid train, have no problem keeping the train moving towards Atlanta and East Point.

What a Chase by Travis W. Newman

What a Chase

When a chase is special in all the meanings, NS 29A glides over Powder Springs Creek on its way to Whitaker Yard behind NS heritage unit 1067, Reading Lines.

Running Flat Out by Travis W. Newman

Running Flat Out

Running back to Rome to clear up and tie up for the day, NS G34 flies down Braswell Mountain behind an odd trio of motorss. Usually this is at most a two motor job for simple run around at Hiram but on this day they had acquired a third motor somewhere,

Old Time Leader by Travis W. Newman

Old Time Leader

We use to see them leading much more frequently, however, more efficient power, a lack of PTC is some of the class, and shifting traffic patterns make this a special catch.
NS 204 power's south though Dallas, Georgia behind NS 40J as the trains prepare to sit in Hiram for hours. The SD70M leading was a nice surprise as the K3 on top sounded for the towns trio of road crossings.

Mountain Manifest by Travis W. Newman

Mountain Manifest

NS 174 pushes past McPherson Church Road as the train makes it way up the mountain toward Rome and Chattanooga.

Pockets of Light & Color

With lighting and fall color being hard to find yesterday, I managed to get a bit of both late in the day. NS 204, overflow traffic from Union Pacific at Memphis, Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia, passes through a small pocket of golden light at CP Green behind UP 5700. The freshly repainted AC44CW still looked good in the little light that I had.

Out of The Darkness

.. and into my lights, NS 29A accelerates away from Whitaker Yard in Austell, Georgia after working the yard with the NS 1067, Reading heritage unit leading.
