90s Feelings

With a feel of 90s or early '00 intermodal, NS i04 struggles up the northern slope of Braswell Mountain behind a veteran EMD leader.

Running Flat Out

Running back to Rome to clear up and tie up for the day, NS G34 flies down Braswell Mountain behind an odd trio of motorss. Usually this is at most a two motor job for simple run around at Hiram but on this day they had acquired a third motor somewhere,

Straight Up The Mountain

NS 29A, led by Norfolk Southern's Nickle Plate Road heritage unit, is thundering up the Northern slope of Braswell Mountain. The intermodal train has no issues climbing the hill as the priority intermodal train close in on Atlanta, Georgia, its terminating station.

Holding on the Hill

I don't remember which train was in front of them having air issues at McPherson but that meant that NS 22N had to hold out strung over the crest of the hill at the 109.0H milepost. Train had a nice assortment of power.

We Fell Down, Over!

Words no dispatcher on the Atlanta North District wants to hear. Braswell Mountain has claimed another train as the NS 732 ground to a halt just short of the 108.0H milepost. Having lost a DP unit passing Ollie, the 20000 ton train could not conquer the hill on 2 or 3 motors.

It took them until almost 9 PM that night to hit the Terminal District, I felt bad for the crew.

Golden Thunder

A freight train at speed is something for many in this hobby a deeply thrilling thing to behold. Add to this, dramatic lighting and a struggle up some difficult piece of the line and its something I for one will never tire of.

NS 29A is about 1/3 of the way up the climb of Braswell Mountain and is pulling hard as the motors begin to lose the fight to keep the train at line speed. This climb never dropped below 20 mph or so but the sound of the working motors echoed down the valley until they finally crested the summit some 5 miles south of this location.

NS 26C screams down the northern flank of Braswell Mountain with the howl of dynamics and the scream of flanges as the manifest and intermodal heads north to Chattanooga.

Down The Mountain

NS 370 is hauling down Braswell as the dispatcher tries to desperately get the railroad liquid again. Trains are tied down at Clark, McPherson, and Finley leaving the railroad very inflexible in terms of passing trains. NS 370 is slap in the middle of a parade of northbounds meeting the nightly pigs coming south.

"Keep 'em wound up 370, 26C is hauling the mail, your on his markers to at least Pinson and if I can swing it all the way to the CT."

Bonnets on Braswell

It was suppose to be transfer power, but NS had other ideas. So that is how the pair of ATSF Warbonnet C44-9Ws lead the NS 223 through the sunny Georgia countryside and up to the summit of Braswell Mountain.

Grinding Up The Grade

With the train fully on the grade, NS 64Q has all three motors, running 2X1, in full throttle to lug the heavy ethanol train over Braswell Mountain. The train is bound for Jacksonville, Florida where it will be handed over to the Florida East Coast Railroad.
