Pennsylvania Railroad

A model Pennsylvania Railroad train is seen at a show in LaGrange. The plethora of head-end cars shows how passenger trains depended upon revenue hauling mail. After 1967, the Post Office discontinued most Railway Post Office operations and this eventually led to the creation of Amtrak.

Penn-Texas

A Pennsylvania RR passenger train is seen at the LaGrange Model Railroad Show. The cars painted in Frisco and Missouri Pacific colors indicate that this might be the Penn-Texas, a New York City-St. Louis train that forwarded cars westward on those railroads.

New buds

The yoshino trees in East Potomac Park are just about fully bloomed as Amtrak's Carolinian heads south onto the Long Bridge. The clouds that had been out for much of the morning fortunately cleared out for a little bit.

Crowd pleaser

The conductor of CSX C750 waves to the crowds traversing the Maine Avenue overpass on their way to the Tidal Basin. The coal train is passing beneath a former PRR signal bridge on the main, while the pedestrians are using the remains of a spur used to serve Water Street's produce yard.

Pennsylvania RR Locomotive #520 Driver Wheel

There were 8 coupled driver wheels on these locomotives. The "Mikado" steam locomotives were made in the thousands, from the late 19th Century through the 1930s. They could pull heavy loads relatively fast and were used by many rail lines in several countries. Now a memory.

When in visited the Railroad Museum last week, I noticed that birds were "prospecting" the undercarriage of several old pieces in the yard for potential nest sites. Ah, Spring!

Acela Express at Havre de Grace, MD

A northbound Acela Express crosses the Susquehanna River on a cold December afternoon. This bridge was built in 1906 by the Pennsylvania Railroad and carries over 100 trains per day. The stone pier visible on the right side of the bridge is a relic of an earlier bridge built in 1866. Amtrak is working on replacing this bridge, though the process is set to take over a decade to complete.
