A view toward the cupola of my town's public library. by Tim Kiser

A view toward the cupola of my town's public library.

At the right, an ornamental arborvitae and a pair of utility pole guywires are bothering one another.

"I have never had a reason to shop at a fabric outlet," I remember Andy Rooney announcing sourly on TV, probably in the 1980s or 1990s. It was hilarious!

Yon dome has loomed o'er this scene since 1905. I wasn't born until 1927.

Deteriorating since 1892: A set of quadruple columns at the pier of an arch at a public library in Connecticut. by Tim Kiser

Deteriorating since 1892: A set of quadruple columns at the pier of an arch at a public library in Connecticut.

The pits in the sandstone at the bottoms of the columns have begun to rival stonecarvings in their intricacy.

What accounts for the unsightly gray blob-shaped areas. I'd hate for this building to be declared an urban blight and demolished!

A 1936 datestone for a public library in Ohio. by Tim Kiser

A 1936 datestone for a public library in Ohio.

DATESTONES ARE OCCASIONS TO RECALL the hit songs of the years the datestones display.

For instance, from 1936 we got "Goody Goody" by Matty Malneck and Johnny Mercer, performed by Helen Ward plus Benny Goodman and His Orchestra, which you could hear here or here if necessary. Me, I have never liked that song!
