Sandusky, Ohio: 1895 at church. by Tim Kiser

Sandusky, Ohio: 1895 at church.

"Est. 1819," it reads on the other side, in an engraving style that makes clear it was added in recent decades. My guess is that somebody in the church got peeved that the building was announcing its own history without referencing the history of the congregation that built it.

The congregation has sold the building and moved to a rented space in a nearby stripmall. According to Google Street View, it happened sometime between July 2019 and September 2021. According to an article in the Sandusky Register, the new owners renamed this building the "Commodore Chapel" and converted it to an Airbnb property named the Lost Sailor Inn ("Find yourself at the Lost Sailor Inn," June 25, 2022).

Lying deceptive datestone. by Tim Kiser

Lying deceptive datestone.

The corrugated bricks do not look like 1850s bricks. The building is not shown on local fire insurance maps from 1893 or 1905. And there is a 1923 datestone elsewhere on the building.

So do not be tricked: Whatever the heck this frigging datestone is commemorating, it is not the building of which it is part. It was probably transferred here from who the heck knows where.

In Sandusky, Ohio, on June 16th, 2024, was a datestone at the First Faith Community Church at the northwest corner of Hancock Street and East Jefferson Street.

According to the cover title of this book, the building was dedicated as the First Reformed Church in March 1925. It is identified on this 1955 fire insurance map as the First Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Expresses the look of 1988!, as architecture of fluted concrete blocks.

I got very excited when I learned this was built in 1988, because I think it is wonderful fun to learn what year a building was built.

Among your memories, are there buildings that resemble this one that have been familiar to you?, buildings to and from which you have routinely come and gone?

For a collection of pictures of buildings built in 1931.

1931 people could put up a building at the nadir of the Great Depression, but maybe they should not have bothered!, seeing now what their efforts have come to.

Ah but these buff-colored bricks have got my mouth watering for a bowl of straw.

Gloss paint on old bricks. Cheerful brown paintjob of Norwalk, Ohio.

AS TO THE AGE of these adjoining painted buildings: They appear on the earliest available fire insurance map of Norwalk at the Library of Congress website, published in December 1884, so they're at least that old. They are beautifully painted.

From 1878 came a three-story brick building to Norwalk, Ohio. by Tim Kiser

From 1878 came a three-story brick building to Norwalk, Ohio.

Nowadays it is the site of Queen Bee Tattoo Supply, but on this 1884 map it was identified as a tobacco warehouse for the F. B. Case Tobacco Factory. On this 1922 map it was part of the Norwalk Tobacco Works, with the first floor identified as a warehouse ("W. HO."), and the 2nd and 3rd floors identified as a tobacco drying area.

Q: In the old days, were northern Ohio tobaccoes prized especially highly, compared to those from other regions of the U.S.? And if so, by whom?: Smokers? Snorters? Chewers? Dippers?
