At last! A classic car that even I can afford in retirement years. A little Bondo, J&B Weld, duct tape, silicone calk and rattle-can spray paint should bring this old 1959 Ford Thunderbird back to life. Pearl River NY. May 2002. by WAVZ 13

The back story: In 2002, I found my original 1972 Kodak Pocket Instamatic 40 buried deep in a box in the basement, which triggered a quick drive to our local Dollar General to buy a cartridge of Ferrania brand 110 film. On the way home, I snapped a couple of photos of this really sad, forgotten Thunderbird using the same camera which took hundreds of my 1970s images.

This is a deep crop of the original, so isn't the sharpest photo. Still, it gets the point across.

Junky vehicles parked on a San Francisco street 20220610-134049

I made this photo of vehicles parked on the streets in the Indian Basin District of San Francisco. With the number of houseless growing throughout the nation, people have resorted to living in old motor homes, Recreational Vehicles (RVs), and , in this case, a bus. They still live in the streets but not literally on the streets. The people who owned this bus also owned the full packed Volvo station wagon in front of it. Both vehicles filled to the gills with STUFF; I guess the owners filled the sidewalk outside the bus so they could get inside the bus. You can see a photo of the Volvo in following slide. I shot both images using my Canon Powershot SX50.

New & improved scan of an old fave. A neighbor on Merwin Ave parked a decrepit 1963 Cadillac in his back yard. It was going to be a "project car" which went absolutely nowhere. This hunk of Detroit steel sat for years right there. Milford CT. July 1973 by WAVZ 13

** I've added a bunch of Flickr Notes to the photo, so enjoy! **

This 10 year old Caddy was obviously in an accident at some point. My neighbor swore he'd fix it up and use it as his daily driver. Well... that never happened. This junker sat for years becoming more moldy and rusty over time.

One of the few movies filmed on location in my hometown of Milford, CT. It's quite a thriller and features some well known actors of the time. Here, the victim's friend enters the CT Post Center from the Boston Post Road. July 1973 by WAVZ 13

Everybody used to just call it "The Post". As in "I'm going to the Post... do you need anything?".

It's been five decades, so I'm curious if anybody remembers the movie, the plot and the actors. Within several minutes of this scene, she (the driver) discovers the dead body of her friend parked in a VW. It gets REALLY fascinating from there...

In the summer of 1973, I had a VERY short-lived job selling Rinso and other detergents right in front of the old Woodmont Laundromat on Merwin Avenue, not too far from Sloppy Joe's Burger joint. The old Sauter hotel hovers in the distance. Milford CT by WAVZ 13

It was one of those crappy summer jobs that we've all been through. I was only 14 years old, so not even legally allowed to work. My "responsibilities" involved sitting on a plastic box outside the laundromat and trying to sell customers cartons of detergent. It worked on a commission basis. After about a week, I said "The heck with this!" and upgraded my career to "lawn care" (mowing lawns, that is).

OK, car guys. Here were have a Kodachrome shot of a junkyard on the banks of the Morris Canal in Jersey City, taken in May 1974. How many of these squashed vintage beauties can YOU identify? by WAVZ 13

Over time, the original emulsion has turned reddish due to improper storage. Sorry about that.

The new, even MORE beautiful Bonneville for '65! Only Pontiac can bring you a car this sporty and attractive! Styling with flair and innovation - sleek and powerful. Youthful and Zesty! Unmistakably Pontiac! Get behind the wheel at your dealership now. by WAVZ 13

Just for the record, I did not take this photo. It was emailed to me by a friend who asked me to upload it. Personally, I think it's an incredibly cool example of utter entropy!

So here we have this vintage 1971 beauty. It was very popular in Europe and the UK in the early 1970s. In America, the Capri was sold through Ford dealerships. All this one requires is a little Bondo and some tender loving care. June 2020. by WAVZ 13

I've placed a number of Flickr notes on this car to explain all of its pertinent details.

Looks like we have yet another fine Moss Mobile here in town. This 1998 Saturn is slowly becoming a habitat for all sorts of mold as well as insect and bacterial life which thrive in humid environments. Quite a beauty! May 2020 by WAVZ 13

I've placed a few Flickr notes on the more salient features of this car.
The interior is even worse! Years of dripping water from an open passenger side window have created a virtual mini-forest of weedy growth which flourishes from heavily moldy carpeting and seats. When you look inside, it absolutely reeks! This vintage beauty has been parked in a driveway for at least a decade several blocks away from my house.

After years of neglect, this is what happened to a once very cool 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7. Looks like it might have been partially restored at some point, then just sat for years slowly rotting away. by WAVZ 13

This photo was taken about 10 year ago. After driving past this relic numerous times, I though it was finally time to snap some photos. Looks like the owner removed the original vinyl roof at some point.

You can see how the original foam dashboard pad had dried out and split in the middle, with the two halves rising up to a peak.

The body contained numerous semi-repaired rusted panels and the interior had that old car smell of moldy vinyl and ancient carpeting.

By the way, there's a series of YouTube videos made by a guy who owns a restoration shop in Portland Oregon. The only cars he works on are Mercury Cougars. He's an absolute font of knowledge and is totally intimate with every detail of these cars. To watch these, go to YouTube and search for "West Coast Classic Cougar". Enjoy!

Light and shadows inside an abandoned 1948 Mercury. All the dashboard controls are visible, including the starter button on the left. Sorry, no infotainment center or GPS. This baby is unmistakably "old school"! by WAVZ 13

I don't see a radio, either. It would have been a tube-driven AM radio, but looks like it might have been removed at some point.

Click on the photo to view all the details in their vintage and somewhat rusted glory.

OK, the last of the abandoned cars in the woods pics. Interesting things to note is that it has a straight-8 engine (the cylinders are visible and moss lives in two of them), the rusty metal fan and those 9 monster bumperettes! What kind of car is this? by WAVZ 13

Buried Treasure?

I really hope this car belongs to no one I know....

It was parked at the library.

Well, there is definitely something burried in there. Treasure? Possibly!
