High of 82 degrees Fahrenheit

Low of 66 degrees Fahrenheit

77 degrees Fahrenheit at capture

On a cooler, cloudy morning two days after some rain passed through the area I visited a small spring-fed stream at the base of some limestone bluffs. After flipping the first few rocks and seeing larval salamanders, I knew this was the right spot to look for my target. Not long after I flipped this old male about twenty feet downstream from the bluffs under a large, chunky rock partly in the water. This salamander was flighty, but sat still for pictures.

Mantidactylus melanopleura, Tampolo-7029

This Mantidactylus melanopleura was day active and about the same size as a Mantella, so much so our guide was convinced it was a Mantella species.

This adult was found at night in the crevice of a rock outcrop in extreme northwestern Arkansas. It was accompanied by two Cave Salamanders (Eurycea lucifuga) and several Western Slimy Salamanders (Plethodon albagula) were crawling along the rock outcrop nearby.

Formerly E. longicauda melanopleura: a subspecies of the Long-tailed Salamander. Recent work indicates it is highly divergent from the Long-tailed salamander and should be elevated to full species status.
