The Midsummer Flower by The Jester

The Midsummer Flower

This flower, called Wood cranesbill in English, has a rather more poetic name in Swedish, or nickname rather. The formal Swedish name is "skogsnäva", or "forest'type-of-flower'", but it is more commonly known as "Midsommarblomster", or "Midsummer flower". It's one of those plants that gives a clear signal that summer is coming, and hence is much anticipated every year. I like the lay-out of the pic, even though it's quite dark, and the crisp focus on the flower.

The Common Lousewort by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Common Lousewort

From late May, lots of numerous little wildflower species start to bloom by the marshes and moorland on the island where I live.

It's pretty interesting when you start looking down, and discover more and more species growing by your feet.

This common lousewort (Pedicularis sylvatica) is one of the species with hundreds of plants growing close to a hiking trail close to the ocean.

Wood cranesbills (Geranium sylvaticum) in the hills by our favourite campsite in Norway- Olden Camping.

We always have to go for a visit there while in Stryn - no matter if they have room for us or not, like this time.

The wood cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum) is a very common flower around these parts right now. And if you look closely in them, quite often you can find a tiny weevil or two in the flower.

This is the meadow cranesbill weevil (Zacladus geranii), a tiny, but tnaky-looking little species. And in this case from the Paradiset nature reserve, there were two of them - in the process of securing the next genaration.

This little guy (~2-3 mm / .1") is a meadow cranesbill weevil (Zacladus geranii) shot at 3.7:1 magnification on a petal of a wood cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum).

If you ask me (during summer) if I could find you a weevil - this is what I most likely end up with when I "need" to find one. The wood cranesbill is a common plant here and just looking at each flower, there is a quite large chance of seeing one of these tiny little guys in there.

Looking For Love - _TNY_1821

If you really need to find weevils during the summer (in Sweden) - I would say the easiest way would be to go looking for this one. The medow cranesbill weevil (Zacladus geranii) as the name suggests, really like the meadow cranesbill, but also the woodland geranium (Geranium sylvaticum), known here as "midsommarblomster" - the midsummer flower. They are quite common and looking into them it is not unusual to see the tiny black weevils hanging out and eating and looking for a mate there.

For a shot of a couple which had found each other on a nearby flower, have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52626134106/

And as this photo shows, that's not all they're doing in there. This couple was helping securing the population of weevils for future summers.
