Dandelion fountains: Enjoy them while you can! by Tim Kiser

Dandelion fountains: Enjoy them while you can!

Here is a dandelion fountain in Winston-Salem that obviously has not been designated a priority for safeguarding during the U.S.'s present societal collapse. It will be lost to us soon!

-----------------------

In downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on April 2nd, 2023, a fountain in a plaza outside the Winston-Salem Journal Building, on the west side of North Marshall Street, south of West 5th Street.

According to the official documentation of the Downtown Winston-Salem Historic District, this part of the building is from 1982, and I initially assumed the fountain would have been from then, too. But then online I found a picture from 1970 showing the fountain (or a similar one), at the same location or nearby.

An abandoned newspaper building from 1956 is here. Oh great a brise-soleil. by Tim Kiser

© Tim Kiser, all rights reserved.

An abandoned newspaper building from 1956 is here. Oh great a brise-soleil.

Do u trust that heavy slab of 215 not to fall on u.

***ONLINE I FOUND A DISCREPANCY*** between two authoritative-seeming documents from 2018: this one saying the building (the Raleigh News & Observer building) was erected 1954-1956, and this one saying it's from 1964. So I looked at Raleigh city directories at ancestrylibrary.com and I think the earlier date is correct: In the 1954 directory the building's address, 215 S McDowell St, was not listed, and the News & Observer was at a different location. In the 1958 directory the News & Observer is listed at 215 S McDowell.

Somebody ought to thank me for looking into the matter, ideally by giving me money.

I recommend shifting all the text to the left. Next, hang a large abstract modernist bronze sculptural ornament from the wall, to the right of the text. Work harder to inspire us to read newspapers in northeastern Michigan.

Journal & Topics Newspapers building

The offices of Journal & Topics newspapers, the chain of weekly newspapers covering northwestern and northern suburbs of Chicago. Since Pioneer Press' Des Plaines Times shut down, Des Plaines Journal, the company's flagship newspaper, has been the only newspaper serving the city - and it served Des Plaines with vigilance and vigor.

The other newspapers cover their respective cities/villages decently. Usually, there is one dedicated staff reporter per town (though, in some cases, the reporter winds up serving two), and editors have been known to double as reporters. The chain does have its own dedicated film critic, which is becoming a bit of a rarity in the suburban chain. Journal & Topics newspapers are known for in-depth political investigations, decent business reporting and loads and loads of advertising supplements.

Seriously - even Pioneer Press' newspapers' sections aren't quite as hefty.

The company is headquartered near downtown Des Plaines. If you go inside... well, you wouldn't be able to get very far, but you will be able to buy the latest issue of any newspaper the company publishes. Which, personally, I found to be pretty handy.

Aside from Des Plaines Journal, the company publishes:

Arlington Hts. Journal
Buffalo Grove Journal,
Elk Grove Journal
Glenview Journal
Golf Mill Journal
Mt. Prospect Journal
Niles Journal
Northwest Journal
Palatine Journal
Park Ridge Journal
Prospect Hts. Journal
Rolling Meadows Journal
Rosemont Journal
Suburban Journal
Wheeling Journal
