Brown brick tower of mutual insurance, the tallest skyscraper in downtown Bloomington: But which Bloomington?!

Here was yet another oblique view of yet another office tower on yet another streetcorner. Now we were "showing the building in relation to its surroundings," great.

-----------------------

In downtown Bloomington, Illinois, on August 10th, 2024, was the former State Farm Building (a "contributing property" in the Bloomington Central Business District, 85000363 on the National Register of Historic Places) at the northwest corner of North East Street (U.S. 51 Business Route) and East Washington Street.

Per the McClean County Museum of History, the building was designed by Lundeen, Hooten, Roozen and Schaeffer, and the first eight floors of the front portion were built 1929-1931. Per a timeline of the building's history in the Illinois State University student newspaper, four more floors were added to the front in 1934; the first eight floors of the rear portion were built in 1939-1940; and four floors were added to that addition in 1945.

Nineteen thirty-one. Lately it's getting to where you have to specify!

The openness of the parking lot makes the building easy to see. For this one I posed my 2000 Ford F-150 Lariat in front of the building.

In Niagara Falls, New York, an office building from 1929 is apartments and hotel rooms nowadays. by Tim Kiser

In Niagara Falls, New York, an office building from 1929 is apartments and hotel rooms nowadays.

"1929? We built it just in time!" the people of the 1930s commonly said, in reference to buildings like these. No I'm just kidding, I made that up.

"The brick sheathing is shaded so that the lower dark brown brick gradually lightens until it becomes a gray buff color on the upper floors," it says here. This is delightful to see.

There's a 1930. by Tim Kiser

© Tim Kiser, all rights reserved.

There's a 1930.

Its fanciness of Art Deco was surely not intended to mock the suffering and desperation of the innocent victims of the Great Depression, but I guess that's what ended up happening.

Verily here was the Axis Hotel in downtown Moline, opened in 2019 in the Fifth Avenue Building, a/k/a the Fifth Avenue Block, originally an office building. The official documentation of the Moline Downtown Commercial Historic District says the building is from 1930, as does the Rock Island County GIS Public Mapping App. The hotel's website has a page about the history of the building, which says it was built in 1927, even as it shows a series of pictures of the building under construction, dated from December 1929 well into 1930, as if we wouldn't notice the discrepancy. This page prepared by members of the Moline Heritage Preservation Commission says construction didn't begin until 1931, which is contradicted by the pictures on the hotel's website.

But anyway, I have DECIDED TO BELIEVE it was completed in 1930, at least mostly.

Federal Public Building

Architect - George Heath MacDonald
Construction was completed in 1958. The Alberta government purchased the building in 1983 for $20.5 million from the federal government to house provincial government offices The building stood empty for 27 years before a five-year renovation that was completed in 2015. That renovation included the "Sky Palace", a personal residence to be used by the Premier. It came to symbolize what was seen as the former Alberta government's sense of entitlement (ruling the province for 40 continuous years), that detail was lost on our current Premier who used the space for a booze-up dinner party during the Covid 19 Lockdown - that event was photographed from a residential balcony using a long lens making the nightly news.
The Federal Building is one of Alberta’s few art deco office buildings.

I composed my picture to honor the building's brick side, which I personally prefer to the Indiana limestone on the front, because I dislike the state of Indiana.
