From 1989 until the late 1990s, the small fleet of six Hunslet-Barclay Class 20/9s completed a grand tour of the British rail network, operating two weed killer trains, initially for British Rail, and later for Railtrack. Back in the days before easy access to 'gen', finding out about these workings was a privilege! Regular pairing 20904 Janis leads 20901 Nancy away from Lowestoft with the Nomix-Chipman weed killing train, formed of four converted Mark 1 coaches and three TTA wagons. The large contraption behind the signal box was a platform under construction for the off-shore oil industry.

The pause at Oulton Broad South to give up a token from the RETB signalling can give the photographer an opportunity to catch up their subject after a photo further down the line - the photographer's bicycle can be seen on the left after a mad dash along Beccles Road! Hunslet Barclay 20901 Nancy and 20904 Janis prepare to depart for Lowestoft with the Nomix Chipman weed killer train. The resident of the station house at the time said that he didn't always appreciate the weed killer visiting due to the negative effects on the vegetables growing in his garden!
The vantage point of the Iron Bridge in Lowestoft is sorely missed, making shots like this no longer possible. It became unsafe and was closed, and then subsequently removed. However, the new Gull Wing bridge, which opened in 2024, has provided an elevated view of the line into Lowestoft, creating a welcome new vantage point for the 21st century.
Hunslet Barclay 20904 Janis leads 20901 Nancy away from Lowestoft with the annual visit of the Nomix Chipman weed killer train. The pair of English Electric Type 1s had run a similar service on the preceding day. Note the pile of shipping containers and gantry crane in the left distance, showing plenty of activity in the Port of Lowestoft at the time.
