The glory of Brocken spectre under the fogbow

On the 16th of Jan. 2025 I had the chance, together with good friends and photographers, to visit mt. Parnitha, the tallest mountain of Athens just north of the city, in order to admire the snowscape. Ideally, we would love to have clear skies with the moon to shine on the fresh snow, but fog was persistent. So, we captured optical phenomena like fogbow, Brocken spectre and glory instead!

Halo with intense parhelia by Christos Doudoulakis

Halo with intense parhelia

22 deg. solar halo with intense parhelia (the wide angle lens doesn't do justice for the deep color and the intensity of the right one, but I had no other lens with me at that moment), observed and shot on 07.05.2024, over Athens, Greece. This was one of the multiple optical phenomena displays we had the last couple of days. May is the "king" of atmospheric optical phenomena (for Athens) according to my detailed multiyear archive. This is the result of the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals (provided by cirrus clouds in this case) and it appears ~22 deg. around the Sun. The day also had a partial horizontal arc, a circumzenithal arc and an upper tangent arc.

Circumzenithal Arc

Circumzenithal arc, observed and shot on 08.05.2024, over Athens, Greece. This was one of the multiple optical phenomena displays we had the last couple of days. May is the "king" of atmospheric optical phenomena (for Athens) according to my detailed multiyear archive. It's the result of the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals (provided by cirrus clouds in this case) and it appears ~46 deg. above the Sun. A contrail as well as a faint supralateral arc are visible as well. The day also had a partial horizontal arc, 22 deg. solar halo, parhelia, upper tangent arc and a parhelic arc.

Breaking wave & spray bow_Banff_Aberdeenshire_Scotland_(IMG_7741a)

A spray bow is formed briefly above a breaking wave on the Moray Firth coast of the North Sea at Banff in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

A 'sea spray bow' is a type of rainbow that occurs as a result of refraction and reflection of sunlight in a screen of spray created by water droplets blown by the wind from a wave.
