Bellamydwarsstraat - Amsterdam (Netherlands)

Bellamydwarsstraat 27/03/2025 15h07
This mural has been slowly coming together since 2010 and it is not a unity. It is all puzzle pieces that meet each other over the years. It would be a nice location for a large mural by one artist but it is what it is.

On the side facades of Bellamystraat 62 and 64 (opposite each other on the cross street) two murals were placed in 2020 under the title Barry & Vos (two neighborhood cats with their own website)

A photo especially taken and uploaded for the Wednesday Walls Group.

Bellamydwarsstraata
The Bellamydwarsstraat is a relatively short street in Amsterdam-West in the Kinkerbuurt. The street is located between the Bellamystraat and the Jan Hanzenstraat and is approximately 95 meters long.

The street was constructed in an area that had previously been used for agriculture and cattle breeding for centuries. In the 19th century, the sites came under the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel. As far as construction was concerned, that municipality remained mainly an empty area, with a few houses here and there.

One the few grand unions of the tram network of Amsterdam is this one on the corner of the Overtoom and Eerste Contantijn Huygensstraat in Oud-West. A grand union is a rail track junction where two double-track railway or tramway lines cross at grade, often in a street intersection or crossroads. A total of sixteen railroad switches (sets of points) allow streetcars (or in rarer installations, trains) coming from any direction to take any of the three other directions. The tram at the other side on line 19 (CAF Urbos 15G 3048) is able to turn left and right as well as going straight on.
This 15G CAF tram with fleet number 3048 has been delivered to the GVB at 12/05/2021 and first in service on 10/07/2021 on line 5.

More information about line 19:
Opened: 22/07/2018 (successor of discontinued line 9)
Route: Diemen - Middenweg - Sarphatistraat - Weteringschans - Leidseplein - de Clercqstraat - Admiraal de Ruijterweg - Sloterdijk
Length: 15.4 km

Admiralengracht | Postjesweg 28/08/2024 11h20
The corner of the Postjesweg and Admiralengracht in the neighbourhood De Baarsjes in Oud-West. Coffee Company has a store here as well. One of the 16 in Amsterdam and 32 in the Netherlands (*02/2025).
The style of this building block can be considered as Amsterdamse School.

De Baarsjes
De Baarsjes is a district in the West of Amsterdam situated west of the city center of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Named after a former hamlet, urban development started in the 1920s. It contains the neighbourhoods Admiralenbuurt, Chassébuurt, Postjesbuurt, and Trompbuurt.
The name comes from the former hamlet De Baarsjes (The Little Perches) that was formed in the 17th century, which in turn derived its name from an inn called De Drie Baarsjes (The Three Little Perches) situated on the eastern border of the present-day district.

Built during the first half of the 20th century along a tram line that brought commuters to the city centre, De Baarsjes was formulated by the architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage who designed the main square Mercatorplein.
In 1990, De Baarsjes became a borough (Dutch: stadsdeel) of Amsterdam.

As it was mostly built before World War II, it was all built to last so when it came to urban renewal in the 1990s, most buildings were renovated and not razed to the ground. Facades were cleaned, suspicious bars and bordellos were closed and ambitious plans to deal with crime and safety were undertaken.
In 2010, the borough of De Baarsjes was merged with Bos en Lommer, Oud-West, and Westerpark into the new borough of Amsterdam-West.

Amsterdam is counting down to its 750th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2025. The city's most practical building has already been dressed in the house style of this grand event. A jubilee year is coming.

Point of view is the Nassaukade. Looking to the other side of the Singelgracht of the city of Amsterdam to what is considered the most uggly building of Amsterdam, the Europarking on the Marnixstraat of Amsterdam. A building with 7 floors and in total 700 parking places. Construction started in 1965 and this builing was completed in 1971. The garage was built on this location, because on this location in the original metro plan for Amsterdam a major subway station was planned, the Rozengracht metro station on the western branch of the East / West Line which has never been built so far.

At the ground floor is Waterkant ('Waterfront') located. A huge terrace for a tropical drink and a tropical bite. Crowded with good weather because there is sun the whole afternoon and evening.

Contrary to what is stated on the street sign, this nice little building at the end of Van Diemenstraat is part of the West district. The Westerpark district existed from 1990 to 2010. As of May 1, 2010, it was incorporated into the new Amsterdam-West district. The Van Diemenstraat is part of the Zeeheldenbuurt (neighbourhood).

Van Diemenstraat
The Van Diemenstraat is a street in the Zeeheldenbuurt of Amsterdam-Centrum.
The street, which is part of the ring road s100, starts at the Barentszplein in the east and ends at the Westerkeersluisbrug that spans the Westerkanaal.
The street only has a few houses on the east side. On the west side is the large warehouse in which Hetveem Theater is located. Previously, a railway line also ran through the street, from the Westerdoksdijk to the bridge, for the railway wagons that were loaded and unloaded at the warehouse.

39/52 Mercatorplein

52 Weeks Project

Cycling through sun-drenched Amsterdam I passed Mercatorplein and saw a great opportunity to take my weekly photo....
Location: Mercatorplein, Amsterdam Oud-West (NL)
Coordinates: 52°22'10.5"N 4°51'03.7"E (Google Maps)
Why-o-why?: I was photo cycling thru Amsterdam to capture a few trams with commercial livery and just made a nice photo of Combino 2083 with UNIQLO livery and came along a quiet and sunny Mercatorplein. A good location for this week's "52" selfie. An idea was born to use more bigger squares in Amsterdam for this purpose like I did with the parks. See 52-Weeks Parks in Amsterdam. So perhaps coming up: Hoofddorpplein, Dam, Stationplein, Muntplein, Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein, Mosplein, Bos en Lommerplein, Museumplein and some more.
Mercatorplein: Mercatorplein is a square in Amsterdam-West. The square was named by council resolution of 30 January 1924. The square was named after the cartographer Gerardus Mercator. The streets in the area around it were also named after cartographers and explorers.
The square is located at the intersection of the Hoofdweg and Jan Evertsenstraat. The latter street is on the north side of the square. The Hoofdweg has a bend here; it arrives at the south-eastern point and departs again at the north-western point, but until the reconstruction in 1995, traffic in a northerly direction drove on the east side of the square. The Mercatorstraat (from the north) and the Van Spilbergenstraat also end at the square, both through a gatehouse.
The square was constructed on the territory of the municipality of Sloten, which was annexed in 1921. This municipality had previously made plans for a new residential area west of the Baarsjesweg and Admiraal de Ruijterweg, but the plans were implemented in a modified form by the municipality of Amsterdam as part of the Plan West.
The square was laid out according to a design by Hendrik Petrus Berlage in 1925, he also designed all the buildings that were built on the square between 1925 and 1927. Dirk van den Broek's supermarket chain had its first branch on the Mercatorplein in 1942.
Public Transport History: On 14 July 1927, tram lines 7 and 17 coming from Jan Evertsenstraat got their terminus on this square and on the Hoofdweg. On 3 November 1927, line 17 was replaced by line 13. In 1929, lines 12 and 13S, since 1931 line 19, were added. Lines 12 and 19 disappeared again in 1932, but lines 7 and 13 have remained here since the twenties and ran around the square. Line 13 was extended via the Hoofdweg to the Bos en Lommerplein in 1950. From 1960 to 1989, bus 19 had its depot on the south side of the square, where line 7 later also got its depot. The old depot became a combined tram and bus stop to replace the stop on the Hoofdweg. In 1989, line 13 was extended via Jan Evertsenstraat to Jan Tooropstraat, Jan van Galenstraat (the "three Jannen") and further, line 7 now took over the route to Bos en Lommerplein while line 19 disappeared from the square. In 1995, the tram loop and the park in the middle of the square disappeared and tracks appeared in two directions over the Hoofdweg, which had also been relocated in a northerly direction.
