52 Weeks Project
Cycling through sun-drenched Amsterdam I passed Mercatorplein and saw a great opportunity to take my weekly photo....
Location: Mercatorplein, Amsterdam Oud-West (NL)
Coordinates: 52°22'10.5"N 4°51'03.7"E (Google Maps)
Why-o-why?: I was photo cycling thru Amsterdam to capture a few trams with commercial livery and just made a nice photo of Combino 2083 with UNIQLO livery and came along a quiet and sunny Mercatorplein. A good location for this week's "52" selfie. An idea was born to use more bigger squares in Amsterdam for this purpose like I did with the parks. See 52-Weeks Parks in Amsterdam. So perhaps coming up: Hoofddorpplein, Dam, Stationplein, Muntplein, Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein, Mosplein, Bos en Lommerplein, Museumplein and some more.
Mercatorplein: Mercatorplein is a square in Amsterdam-West. The square was named by council resolution of 30 January 1924. The square was named after the cartographer Gerardus Mercator. The streets in the area around it were also named after cartographers and explorers.
The square is located at the intersection of the Hoofdweg and Jan Evertsenstraat. The latter street is on the north side of the square. The Hoofdweg has a bend here; it arrives at the south-eastern point and departs again at the north-western point, but until the reconstruction in 1995, traffic in a northerly direction drove on the east side of the square. The Mercatorstraat (from the north) and the Van Spilbergenstraat also end at the square, both through a gatehouse.
The square was constructed on the territory of the municipality of Sloten, which was annexed in 1921. This municipality had previously made plans for a new residential area west of the Baarsjesweg and Admiraal de Ruijterweg, but the plans were implemented in a modified form by the municipality of Amsterdam as part of the Plan West.
The square was laid out according to a design by Hendrik Petrus Berlage in 1925, he also designed all the buildings that were built on the square between 1925 and 1927. Dirk van den Broek's supermarket chain had its first branch on the Mercatorplein in 1942.
Public Transport History: On 14 July 1927, tram lines 7 and 17 coming from Jan Evertsenstraat got their terminus on this square and on the Hoofdweg. On 3 November 1927, line 17 was replaced by line 13. In 1929, lines 12 and 13S, since 1931 line 19, were added. Lines 12 and 19 disappeared again in 1932, but lines 7 and 13 have remained here since the twenties and ran around the square. Line 13 was extended via the Hoofdweg to the Bos en Lommerplein in 1950. From 1960 to 1989, bus 19 had its depot on the south side of the square, where line 7 later also got its depot. The old depot became a combined tram and bus stop to replace the stop on the Hoofdweg. In 1989, line 13 was extended via Jan Evertsenstraat to Jan Tooropstraat, Jan van Galenstraat (the "three Jannen") and further, line 7 now took over the route to Bos en Lommerplein while line 19 disappeared from the square. In 1995, the tram loop and the park in the middle of the square disappeared and tracks appeared in two directions over the Hoofdweg, which had also been relocated in a northerly direction.
