Afghanistan. UNHCR distributes winter cash payments to displaced families in Kabul

A UNHCR staff member assists displaced families waiting to receive winter cash assistance in Kabul. UNHCR and partners have distributed winter cash payments to 1,000 displaced families in the Afghan capital. ; Nearly 700,000 people have been forced from their homes in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2021, joining 2.9 million Afghans already internally displaced across the country at the end of 2020. On 15 August, the Taliban took control of the country. The withdrawal of foreign aid has crippled the economy and led to a humanitarian crisis, with some?22.8 million people?in the country facing food insecurity.

Pettorale Pakol, PNG

Grande conchiglia "Pakol", Mendi Valley, Southern Highlands, Papua Nuova Guinea.
per un esemplare analogo si veda “ Art of the New Guinea Highlands” , de Young Museum, SF p.480

Bailer Shell “Pakol”, Mendi Valley, Southern Highlands,
Papua New Guinea.
These large Bailer Shells ( Melo melo ) are traded up from the coastal areas into the high mountains, where they become objects of great value. They are shaped and polished, and worn by men as pectorals in ceremonial dancind. But also, being very valuable, can be part of bride price.
Some ‘Pakol” have geometric designs, made with tiny dots, of triangels long the top edge. More rarely a full figure, representing an ancestor, is engraved – again using small dots – into the surface of the shell. For a similar example see “ Art of the New Guinea Highlands” , de Young Museum, SF p.480
