Abandoned coal loader / bridge overpassing the active Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway. There used to be a car siding on the right side for loading the coal hoppers. When the mine was active, this would have been the P&WV (Pittsburgh & West Virginia) Railway.
Deteriorating concrete support structure at the former Banning Number 1 Coal Mine processing plant. Easily accessed from the Great Allegheny Passage.
Abandoned ruins of the former Banning Number 1 coal mine preparation plant, Perry Township on the edge of Fayette County. The mine was owned by the Pittsburgh Coal Company and closed in the 1950's. The infamous Darr Mine was located less than a mile away from here, and eventually Banning Number 1 and 3 Mines were connected to the Darr mine about three years after the Darr Mine explosion. This is the prime time of year to photograph abandoned places, with the greenery coming in just enough to add color, but not yet covering up everything.
