1914 stack-of-bricks in Dallas. by Tim Kiser

1914 stack-of-bricks in Dallas.

Lo the Western Union Telegraph Company Building, built in 1913-1914, originally known as the Masonic Blue Lodge Temple, by Tannehill Lodge No. 52 and Dallas Lodge No. 760 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (A.F. & A.M.).

As documented for the Dallas Landmark Commission, the building became an unmanageable financial burden for the lodges, so they leased it to Western Union beginning in 1919.

The other two sides of the building are surfaced in Indiana gray limestone with "Egyptian"-style ornamentation. If you want to see that, you're on your own. I'm over here looking at the red bricks.

The building is a "contributing property" in the Dallas Downtown Historic District, 04000894 and 08001299 on the National Register of Historic Places. The district's official documentation incorrectly says it was built in 1930.

Uninspiring sculpture!, among a vast expanse of 1980s brick veneer.

My apologies to the sculptor(s) if they poured their heart(s) and soul(s) into this. Its placement here seems desultory and cynical, as though the building owner would get a break on their property taxes if they installed a public art.

Yuck!: The infamous "pee cubby" at the Little Tokyo Galleria at 3rd & Alameda in L.A.

The shopping mall "Little Tokyo Galleria" was built in 1985 and its architects are widely mocked and disdained for situating a pee-stained emergency egress at the building's most prominently visible corner, overlooking a busy intersection.

Also the city of Los Angeles is widely mocked and disdained for its inadequacy of access to indoor toilets!

Wow this commercial building is *extreeemely* modest in appearance!!

An outer structure of wooden siding forms a recessed shelter for a wall of 1960s-1970s-looking stone veneer surrounding the back door.

I FEEL THAT THE colors of the outer structure — gray paint for the wooden siding and grayish blue for the phony shutters — were well-chosen, comfortably modest.

1890 House Museum - Cortland, NY - Inglenook

The Inglenook (First Floor) - An Inglenook is a chimney corner that is nestled under a grand staircase. You can sit on benches on either side of the fireplace. The Inglenook first appeared in American homes in the 1870s and became a common feature of entrance halls in fashionable homes built in the next decade. This cozy intimate space softened the formality of the hall, which for many years served strictly as a waiting room for visitors.

Blooming flowers in downtown Cincinnati in late December.

"Someybody's been smearing lipstick on that curb," my favorite joke to make about firetruck parking zones.

See the recessed corner area in the shadows back there: Tonight in my dreams I'm going to make that into a merchandise display window by glassing it in and installing some lighting and mannequins and a colorful backdrop.
