"Out here doin' my rounds!" I announced cheerfully as I strode the alley. I made a show of pretending to inspect the tangle of telecommunications cables along the wall.

In downtown Asheville, North Carolina, on September 28th, 2022, were the Vanderbilt Apartments at the northeast corner of Haywood Street and Vanderbilt Place, as viewed from Rankin Avenue south of Hiawassee Street.

The building opened in 1924 as the George Vanderbilt Hotel, which was designed by William Lee Stoddart and was more ornate than it is now.

According to this 1999 article, it was converted to senior apartments in 1969, at which time its ornate façade was stripped and replaced with tan bricks. A semblance of its original appearance was restored in 1999, in part by staining the tan bricks red.

Forget-me-not Carpet

Flowers of the Siberian Bugloss plant (Brunnera macrophylla) - native to the Caucasus. It's a hardy, rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial, that can reach from 12 to 18 inches. Sprays of small blue flowers, similar to forget-me-nots, are borne from mid-Spring and bloom for eight to ten weeks. Plants are happy in any shady area that stays relatively moist. It often self-seeds, appearing around the garden in other places. Clumps may be easily divided in early fall.

An asymmetrical gable roof!, tucked into a corner.

We can see that there used to be a symmetrically gabled canopy above the door. I would have recommended making it asymmetrical to match the roofline, but I was not around to give advice back then.
