Olive-winged bulbul

Bulbuls are members of the wide-spread family Pycnonotidae and related to the Sylvidae (Grasmückenartige), which in Europe contains among others the garden warbler and the european black-cap. The most common species of bulbuls in Singapore is clearly the roughly song-thrush sized yellow-vented bulbul, which can be found throughout the island, while other species are a little less common. I therefore was quite happy to find this Olive-winged bulbul in the forest of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in the center of the island.

Dipper falls by Jan Rothe

Dipper falls

Many smaller side streams of the main river in my region - the Elbe, stretching from the Czech Republic‘s Giant Mountains to the Northern Sea near Hamburg, have smaller cataracts and waterfalls in narrow valleys, which provide a good habitat for the White-Throated Dipper. They are often a little difficult to photograph as most of these smaller streams are housed in with sandstone side-walls, prohibiting low-angle pictures, and many of these valleys are also rather dark, even in fall when the leaves allow a little more light to reach the valley floor. I still found this one worth sharing due to the leave colors giving at a little extra. At 1/8th of a second exposure and still ISO 5000, you can probably guess how many of these picture went straight into the dump.

Springtime memories by Jan Rothe

Springtime memories

With the warm temperatures that we currently have, and some birds starting to sing again, I remembered this year‘s spring, when I found this Eurasian Tree Sparrow on a still leafless scrub in front of the first green of spring. This year, tree sparrows are struggling significantly in Germany, with a collapse of populations in many areas in the Northwest. The reason is not yet understood, but several adult birds have been found dead sitting on their eggs, so it definitely is more than the usual decline due to habitat loss. I hope you all enjoy this picture and find it as motivation to help tree sparrows and other small birds by letting meadows grow longer, allowing flowering plants to grow and produce seeds and by not using herbicides and pesticides in your garden and around your house.
