Welcome back ♡

In addition to the oystercatchers I posted yesterday, the first northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) arrived on a field in our municipality as well yesterday.

In addition to the fields, we also meet them on the skerries and beaches when they arrive on our island, like this one from the archive.

So today we will go out to search for them here as well in the nice weather.

Flying Fish by Ranveig Marie Photography

Flying Fish

From the middle of June last year, when common terns (Sterna hirundo), as well as different seagulls, hunted shoals of fish by the beaches in our neighbourhood for days.

It was quite a show, and very fun to sit that close without them caring about me.

Terns Up Close by Ranveig Marie Photography

Terns Up Close

One of many common terns (Sterna hirundo) and different seagulls as well, that came very close while fishing on shoals of small fish by the beaches in our neighbourhood in June.

They went on for several days, and the job of deleting photos is big. But it's nice to find photos of them in so many fun poses, both with and without fish ツ

Without birds, life would not be the same

(Martin Eggen)

I have finally set aside a day to listen to Martin Eggen's new great book "Uten fugler blir ikke livet det samme - Hvorfor fuglene forsvinner, og hva vi kan gjøre for å hjelpe dem" (Without birds, life will not be the same - Why the birds are disappearing, and what we can do to help them).

He is a nature conservation advisor at BirdLife Norway, and I have already learned much from following him on social media over the last years.

This is the critically endangered northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), on a beach in my neighbourhood.

The species has disappeared many places in Norway, but we are lucky to still have many of them nesting close to our home. They brought up many chicks this year as well.

Joys of June by Ranveig Marie Photography

Joys of June

There has been a lot of tern photography this June ツ

I thought I got the best I could of them at the beginning of May, during their courtship in our neighbourhood, but I have had so many new tern experiences this month as well.

After living on Eigerøy island for 8 years now, I finally went by boat to an islet for the first time, where about 16 common terns like this one (Sterna hirundo) have nested, and had many chicks to feed when I photographed them from the boat.

And some days later, many of the common terns and different seagulls hunted shoals of fish by the beaches in our neighbourhood for days. It was quite a show!

It was so easy to sit down and wait for them coming to hunt right in front of me. The common tern on this photo was one of seven diving only a couple of meters away from me!

And one week ago, I also got even better photos than before of at least 100 Arctic terns, up close in all kinds of situations, on our road trip to Tranøy lighthouse in Northern Norway where they nest.

And these two last days of June, I've photographed a family of common terns again, for the first time on the island I'm from. A couple are still feeding three big chicks that are just able to fly.

I hope that July will bring some nice nature experiences as well, even though my favourite months in nature are over now..

Behind my lucky rock by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

Behind my lucky rock

A young black-bellied plover, also called grey plover (Pluvialis squatarola), on one of the smaller beaches in our neighbourhood - that has a rock that I have sneaked behind several times, to photograph wading birds during migration.

I can't quite understand it, since it only covers half of me- but the birds always come very close there.

I have also taken nice close-ups of both northern lapwings and bar-tailed godwits from behind the same rock, without them noticing me (viper og lappspover in Norwegian).

The black-bellied plover doesn't breed in Norway, but it uses our coast as a migration route especially in autumn, from the Russian tundra far north.

It is a more distinct beach bird than the similar European golden plover (heilo in Norwegian), which stays on our fields now during migration.

The Velvet Scoter by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Velvet Scoter

I realized that I have never posted a photo of a velvet scoter (Melanitta fusca) before, even though I can see these diving ducks every day, through nearly the whole year where I live. But they don't come close to land that often, so that's the reason why I don't have that many photos.

This beautiful black one is the male, and the female is brown with white patches on each side of the head.

Check out more photos of them in the links below the line!

Tårnes pano

A beautiful week-end on the Fosen peninsula in Trøndelag. This was the end of a dirt road-turned-track: a tiny cemetery and chapel surrounded by water on three sides - fjord on the left going out to the North Sea on the right. Wild geese on the islets in the fjord were making the only noise.
