Head-on Attack

The sun had disappeared by the time this third train of the day from Wernigerode to the Brocken had arrived on 28th October 2012, making its grand entrance at Thumkuhlenkopf behind Class 99.23-24 2-10-2 tank 99 7237-3. However, the 'elephant's head' exhaust was no less impressive.

Thumkuhlenkopf Vista - 2

On as good a morning that anyone could expect in the autumn season in the Harz Mountains, HSB Class 99.23-24 2-10-2 tank 99 7236-5 hammers up the grade at Thumkuhlenkopf with a morning Brockenbahn service on 28th October 2008.

Climbing from Thumkuhlen Tunnel

HSB Class 99 23-24 2-10-2 tank 99 7239-9 forges up the steep climb from Thumkuhlenkopf tunnel, well on its way to Drei Annen Hohne, with the first Brockenbahn service of the day on 10th March 2008. Built in the mid-1950s for the Deutsche Reichsbahn, especially for use on these duties, these massive workhorses, the largest built for narrow gauge lines in Germany, continue to serve their role admirably some sixty years on. 99 7239-9 by this time had been rebuilt with redesigned plate frames, some locomotives being dealt with from 2004 as a result of suffering cracks and distortion of their frames during their demanding service over the years.

Thumkuhlenkopf Thunder

With a morning Wernigerode to Brocken service on 9th March 2008, HSB 2-10-2 tank 99 7243-1 thunders up the grade just above Thumkuhlenkopf tunnel, approximately mid-way between Steinerne Renne and Drein Annen Hohne.

Thumkuhlenkopf Felling

On 8th March 2008, HSB 2-10-2 tank 99 7232-4 is in full cry on a straight section along the sinuous route below Thumkuhlenkopf, working with a service train to Drei Annen Hohne and on the Brocken Mountain. Unexpected views such as this can occasionally be opened up with tree felling work. These tend to be temporary 'windows', to be exploited whenever the opportunity arises, for replacement saplings are very soon planted and can quickly obliterate the view for passengers and photographers alike.
