Noticed a nice pool of oil under the Transit this morning.
As far as I can tell it's leaking from the bottom of the dipstick where it meets the sump, but without access to a workshop I can't be certain. The earliest I can get it booked into a garage I trust is towards the end of the month! At least it'll keep the underside relatively protected...
Storytime...
In early 2020 I put in an order for a brand new Transit Custom. Got a brilliant deal on a top of the range 'Sport' model with pretty much every optional extra. They couldn't give them away at the time.
At the time I had just sold my previous house, Covid was making waves in the news and I was house hunting, so decided to cancel the order, hoping to be in a better position to buy once I'd found a new house and sorted a new mortgage.
Covid messed things up a lot more than anyone could have expected and I ended up buying the seemingly never ending bungalow project, so it took a very long time to be in a position to replace the current Transit.
The current lead time for a factory order for a new Transit Custom is around 12 months. By which time I'll hopefully be well finished renovating the bungalow and be in a better position to spend on the new van.
With an all new Transit Custom on the horizon I thought I'd be able to get a good deal on the current outgoing model. How wrong was I?! For one in Sport spec, with only a couple of options the price was 70% more than my original quote from 2020. In fact, a base spec Custom with absolutely no options is more expensive than the 2020 quote I had.
5 year old decently specced vans in good condition have barely depreciated. It's madness!
All of which leaves me in a dilemma with what to do with mine. It's getting tired now, bodywork is starting to get very tatty and it ticked over 191,000 miles a couple of days ago. But I can't justify paying stupid money to replace it.
Do I spend probably more than I should in getting the bodywork sorted and a full mechanical overhaul and hopefully get another couple of years out of it and hope the market returns to some sort of normality, or do I bite the bullet and pay a ridiculous price for a second hand van? I certainly can't justify a brand new one anymore.
