AKEBONO CHERRY TREE BLOSSOMS Hastings - Sunrise Neighborhood

Vancouver, BC Canada

Hastings-Sunrise is a vibrant neighborhood in East Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s known for its diverse community, scenic views of Burrard Inlet, and historic significance. The area is home to the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) and Playland, making it a lively spot for entertainment and events.

The neighborhood has a mix of residential homes, local businesses, and parks, including New Brighton Park and Sunrise Park, which offer great outdoor spaces. Hastings-Sunrise also has a rich history, dating back to the 19th century, when it was originally known as New Brighton before being renamed in honor of Admiral George Fowler Hastings.

The Akebono Cherry Blossom (Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono') is a stunning flowering cherry tree known for its soft pink, semi-double blossoms that bloom in mid-spring. The flowers gradually fade to white as they open fully, creating a breathtaking display.

This tree has an upright habit when young but spreads with age, forming a rounded canopy. It grows to about 25-35 feet tall and 25-40 feet wide, making it a great choice for gardens, parks, and streetscapes.

The Akebono Cherry is a cultivar of the Yoshino Cherry, originally selected in 1925 in California. It’s celebrated for its rain-resistant flowers and disease resistance, making it a popular choice in the Pacific Northwest.
