Here was the "Costa Azul Suites Virginia Beach" hotel. According to city property records at propertysearch.virginiabeach.gov, the building was built in 1972. According to Google Streetview, it was formerly a Super 8 motel; see it here in 2007. Also according to Streetview, the hotel was remodeled circa 2011 and this wall was resurfaced in buff-colored EIFS (I think), at which time it was also rebranded a "Clarion Inn & Suites." Sometime between 2019 and 2022, the wall was painted light bluish gray and the hotel was again rebranded the Costa Azul Suites. Sometime prior to January 2025, it was rebranded the "Garner, an IHG Hotel."

What a boring history!

Stone veneer '76.

I like the stone veneer but I wish there were more of it, wrapping around the corner to cover the wall of concrete blocks at the left, and extending upward several stories into the sky.

Transit Ventilating Tower at 1190 2nd Avenue (architect unknown, probably 1980s). This is part of the string of opaque, brooding, Brutalist ventilating complexes following the subway's IND 63rd Street line. See counterparts in Long Island City here and here. I swear I didn't make a point of shooting all these on dour, overcast afternoons! Out of the whole set, this is the most functionalist and the least interested in sculpting its windowless mass into some approximation of castellation or the like. I suspect it's only a matter of time until the whoel front gets painted MTA blue, with little letters "M" and "A" tacked on somehow to the left and right.

the strange corridor

tucked away in the depths of a café within hamburg's alster arkaden, a peculiar corridor reveals itself. captured on a journey to the restroom, this windowless passage speaks of an odd charm. ornate sconces and delicate floral arrangements attempt to inject life into the space, while mismatched seating awaits patrons in a state of quiet anticipation. the walls, seemingly bent with age and wear, give a sense of unease and intrigue. each step through this curious corridor, nestled beneath grand rooms with skewed views of the alster, invites a surreal pause in the everyday bustle above.

Explorama Tours Bus, Iquitos, Peru

We flew to Iquitos from Peru; in fact Iquitos, on the Amazon River, can only be reached by air or the river. There are no overland roads. This rickety looking window-less bus met us at the airport and drove us down to the dock where we boarded a flat bottom boat for a 45-minute trip down river to the Explorama Lodge on the shores of the Amazon River.

This was one of the longest trips we had taken up to that point, consisting of 3 flights, 1 bus ride and a boat ride to get to the resort. As I recall, we took a nice long nap in our nicely air-conditioned room when we arrived !

Last orders

Part of the Mansfield Brewery Site which opened in 1855 and closed in 2002. This Nottinghamshire Limestone wall with bricked-up windows and doors looks older than 1855 to me. Part of the iconic Edwardian building next door is now, appropriately, a micro pub.
