So you’ve heard of Barnacle Bill the Sailor? Meet Barnacle Barry the Barrel.
I stumbled across this old photo just nudiustertian. (New favourite word—sorry) I spotted Barry sunbaking on the sands of Moonee Beach. Crusty old thing, definitely more flotsam than jetsam. At first glance, he might look like just another washed-up relic .... but, the adventures he has had. He remembers them all like nudiusterian.
You’re probably thinking, “Here we go again,” and ready to move on to the next Flickr post. But Barry's story needs to be told ;)
Barry went to sea as a young, green, wet-around-the-ears barrel. He excelled at both green and wet. He started his career on a rust-bucket freighter named The Salty Barnacle, entrusted with carrying… well, no one’s really sure. Rum, maybe. Sea cucumbers, possibly. There’s speculation it was glow-in-the-dark garden gnomes or even a confetti machine. The truth is forever lost to nudiustertian.
The Salty Barnacle sprang a leak in the Coral Sea (as good a sea as any to spring a leak) during a midnight storm. With a name like the Salty Barnacle it was destined to sink in my opinion. That marked the start of Barry’s solo career.
Since then, he’s drifted through countless nautical escapades:
– Rode out hurricanes
– Narrowly avoided becoming an octopus’s garden
– Was briefly worshipped by a pod of dolphins who mistook him for an ancient sea god, Barry the Buoyant (they offered him fish; he declined politely)
– Fell hopelessly in love with a buoy named Sue off the coast of Nouméa. It was a whirlwind affair until she drifted back into her shipping lane. Poor Barry, it still feels like nudiustertian to him.
He collected barnacles and rusty patches like passport stamps, and after years of aimless floating, and some light corrosion, Barry washed ashore at Moonee Beach —retired, encrusted, and perfectly content.
Look closely and you’ll see he proudly dangles a few strands of red and blue rope. Either the remains of a heroic rescue or a very confused knitting project. Possibly a cardigan made by Sue.
This is a work of fiction. Any similarities to actual barrels, rusty or clean, are purely coincidental.
Happy Friday, and thanks kindly for any likes or comments—they’re always appreciated!

The rain felt like a whisper against my skin as I stood at the water’s edge, watching the swans glide effortlessly across the lake. Their movements were calm, steady.
This was meant to be an escape, a moment of solitude, and as I breathed in the fresh scent of rain, I realized it could be just that. The swans moved with quiet certainty, unbothered by anything beyond their small world of rippling water.
I took a slow breath, letting the quiet settle around me. And for the first time in a long while, I felt a sense of lightness. Just me, the water, and the swans—floating toward something new and full of possibility.

Prompt: An antique clock with a pendulum and a cuckoo is hanging on the wall. There is a dim light in the room and only a ray of sunlight falls on the golden pendulum of the clock. There is antique furniture in the room, clean and tidy. There is a vase of flowers on the table on an openwork napkin. The realistic clock attracts attention and is the accent of the painting --ar 5:4 --v 7
