Black Toad

Anaxyrus exsul
Inyo County, California, USA

Black toads (Anaxyrus exsul) have one of the smallest ranges of any anuran (frog/toad) in North America. This species is native to just a handful of springs in the Deep Springs Valley of Inyo County, California—the surrounding desert scrub is inhospitable to these amphibians. Black toads are closely related to the western toad (Anaxyrus boreas), but are thought to have become isolated sometime in the Late Pleistocene (≥12,000 yrs). This species is listed as "threatened" and "fully protected" in California.
