Tall Trees Lined Along the Blue Ridge Parkway

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views along Skyline Drive at a location Google Maps depicts as PunchBowl Mountain Overlook. This is along the Blue Ridge Parkway. My thought on composing this image was to use the road as a leading line with the trees on both sides of the road to help channel the look ahead. I also tried to keep a balance with having more of the road with that of the trees overhead in wanting to angle my Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera upward to capture more of the canopy above.

Taking One Day at a Time in Jasper National Park

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views of this forested setting in Maligne Canyon. This is in Jasper National Park. With this image, I used a clearing in the nearby woods I was walking by and aligned myself to center the Maligne River flowing by. I zoomed in with a focal length so that the image setting would be only of the river and the forest of evergreen trees.

Hiking Along the Knife Edge Trail with Only Amazing Views! (Mesa Verde National Park)

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views and hiking the Knife Edge Trail in Mesa Verde National Park. The ridges off in the distance are coming off the main park area and road entrance, while this path follows the older park road entrance. My thought I\'m composing this image was to take advantage of the layers present, from near to far, while using the hiking trail as a leading line into the image.

As a side note, I later came to realize the overlook point I’d visit next was on the other side of this bend at Montezuma Valley Overlook, following the old park entrance road.

Any Excuse to Visit Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

While at a roadside pullout along Utah Scenic Byway 12 with a view looking to the southwest across the high desert of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. My thinking in composing this image was to take advantage of the nearby foreground to create a layered look with some nearby canyons and eroded gullies leading up to more distant colorful slickrock. I felt including some shrubbery and small trees helped to add to that look of the American West in the image captured.

Getting Myself to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument!

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views across canyons, gullies and colorful slickrock from a roadside pullout along Utah Scenic Byway 12. This is in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. I decided to take advantage of some nearby shrubbery and old trees present to create a look beyond. I also closed down on the aperture so that more of the entire image would be in focus.

Fresh Ideas for Travel in Indiana Dunes National Park

While walking the Tolleston Dunes Trail and a view looking to the southwest down and then across a forested dunes area in this part of the national park. From this high ground I was walking, I was able to capture a more sweeping view with the grasses and trees, some of which were only then coming into bloom for spring. For post-production, I then decided to once again try out the sky replacement setting in Photoshop with this image. The blue sky colors with clouds definitely seemed appropriate for this national park setting in what I had wanted to experience in person. So the skies are part of the Adobe stock images in Photoshop but all else is captured with my Nikon D850 SLR camera. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Hello, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument!

While at a roadside pullout along Utah Scenic Byway 12 at the Calf Creek Viewpoint in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. My thoughts on composing this image was to take advantage of some nearby shrubbery and old trees and have that as a look beyond to the varied landscape present in this part of the national monument. Angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward would, in my mind, create more of a sweeping view looking across it. That would in turn raise the horizon higher into the image and perhaps create more of a sense of grandeur in the image captured.

A Panoramic Setting with a Road Ahead Leading to Santiago Peak

At a roadside pullout on US Hwy 385 with a view looking to the southwest just outside of Marathon, Texas, on a drive to Big Bend National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to use the centerline and road ahead as a leading line into the image with Santiago Peak as a focal point and distant destination. I used the swiveled out LCD screen and LiveView on my Nikon SLR camera to line up the image. I could then just touch that screen to focus and meter the image captured. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

My Navigations Along Utah Scenic Byway 12 (Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument)

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views across gullies, canyons, and eroded formations present at Calf Creek Viewpoint in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. From this overlook, I felt I was able to create a more sweeping view across this high desert landscape.

Taking in the American West at Calf Creek Viewpoint (Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument )

A view looking to the southwest at a roadside pullout along Utah Scenic Byway 12. This is located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and takes in view of the Aquarius Plateau with the high desert landscape setting that includes eroded gullies and colorful slickrock stretching off to a distant horizon. My thinking in composing this image was to take advantage of the nearby tree or shrubbery and desert plant-life and have a captured view of a log beyond. I closed down on the aperture so that more of the entire setting would be in focus, even though the focal point was with the nearby tree or shrubbery. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Navigating a New Travel Normal

A setting looking to the southwest at a roadside pullout just outside of Marathon, Texas. My thinking in composing this image was to use the road and center stripe as a leading line into the image with Santiago Peak as that distant point in the image center. I took advantage of the swiveled out LCD screen and used LiveView to center and line up the image as well as finding a focus point. That would also help to minimize my time on the road, even if there was no traffic present. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Scenic and Historic Indiana Dunes National Park

While walking the Bailly Chellberg - Little Calumet Loop with a view looking to the south across a grassy meadow to the historic Bailly Homestead. In composing this image, I went back-and-forth in my mind as to angling my Nikon SLR camera. Here I decided to angle it more leveled on and have a balanced focus with the meadow and surrounding trees. While the overcast skies were in my mind kind of a negative space, here they kind of helped to balance the image and national park setting. Kind of a color contrast, if you will. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

On the Road Again with Baby Yoda

This was more of a fun type image to capture and obviously not to license, given the figure present :-) My thinking in composing this image was to take advantage of this long stretch of road present outside of Marathon, Texas, and have Baby Yoda in the center of the road. That road would be the leading line into the image with Santiago Peak off in the distance. I used the swiveled out LCD screen with LiveView to center up and align the image as well as picking a focus point on the figure.

Green Water of Lake Chelan Surrounded by Towering Peaks (North Cascades National Park Service Complex)

From time to time, there'd be a clearing in the tall evergreen trees all around while walking the Imus Creek Loop. It was then one had a chance to take in amazing views across and of Lake Chelan. Here the lake waters had a very green (if not a little turquoise) look. A perfect complement of colors with the evergreens going up the nearby and far-off mountainsides. The blue skies with wisps of clouds would then be a nice color contrast to complete the setting.

First Sightings of Bison in Custer State Park

For the most part along the Wildlife Loop Road, I'd just been taking in views of the rolling hillsides and landscape...and then I saw two cars ahead of me pulled off the side of the road. I saw bison! Knowing the long distance, I quickly changed lens to my Tamron 150-600mm one and found a place to brace myself to capture a "less shaken" image. This was of two bison I noticed just down the road from the Wildlife Station Visitor Center. The nearby hillside made for a nice backdrop that complemented the darker colors present with the bison.
