At East Portal, Colorado, an eastbound Union Pacific IPPX coal empty exits the Moffat Tunnel and begins descending the two-percent grade toward Denver. Autumn color at East Portal, situated at a little over 9,200 feet in elevation, is pretty much at its peak on this beautiful morning of September 26, 2024.
Amtrak’s eastbound California Zephyr has just exited the 6.2-mile long Moffat Tunnel, and now begins its 50-mile descent to the city of Denver late in the afternoon of September 25, 2024. It’s a beautiful day near the Continental Divide in Colorado’s high country, with the warm colors of autumn backlit by a quickly setting sun.
