Hitchhikers

This is what happens when you walk through blackland prairie grasses with your camera down by your side. I noticed my birding buddy had picked up a couple of hitchhikers on her camera.

Kestrel Snacks

I was checking to see if the kestrels had returned to their winter hunting grounds. Didn't find them but the dry prairie grasses were full of their favorite snacks. The kestrels eat grasshoppers like potato chips all winter long.

So Many Color Variations by Kaptured by Kala

So Many Color Variations

Admirable grasshoppers come in a large variety of colors & markings. Some of this is gender based, if you see one that is mostly green or green & brown, it will be female but even then there is a lot of variation. And when immature like this one, you can't see the circles on the wings that tell you it is an admirable. She really blends in well with the grass.

Cool Grasshopper Lifer by Kaptured by Kala

Cool Grasshopper Lifer

Took a photo of an ordinary looking grasshopper on a little nature trail. In the middle of a sidewalk. Turned out to be new for me and a subspecies that only has 3 other observations on iNaturalist and will be the 1st for DFW. Plus the name is misleading for the way an adult female looks. I would be skeptical except for the fact that the leading grasshopper expert I know made the identification.

Red-legged Grasshopper On The Pasture Fence

So many different kinds of grasshoppers in one yard and pasture. I'm sure I've not found them all yet. Walking the fence line is a good way to find all kinds of critters.

Grasshopper Laying Eggs

Walking along a gravel path & spotted a female grasshopper laying her eggs. Took the shot at a distance so I didn't disturb her.

Grasshoppers Are Tough by Kaptured by Kala

Grasshoppers Are Tough

There were grasshoppers all over the dry pasture I was exploring on July 4th. I never realized this one was missing a hind leg until processing the shot. Seems even in 100+ weather, full sun and in the middle of a drought, grasshoppers thrive.

Spur-throated Grasshopper

On Mother's Day, my grandson Riley & I explored the vacant lot beside his house. Riley found this grasshopper on a pile of sand. An adult female.

It's Grasshopper Season by Kaptured by Kala

It's Grasshopper Season

It's that time of the year. You can't take a step in nature without having a grasshopper spring up and away. And every year at this time, the kestrels return for the winter to the prairies at White Rock lake. There is a female kestrel I've watched for several years that eats these like popcorn.

Two-striped Mermiria

A bug's eye view of the world. Found this toothpick grasshopper in the pastures I was exploring. Only the 2nd time I've seen this species. Weather was hot with intense sunlight. Perfect for grasshoppers.

Almost Stepped On It by Kaptured by Kala

Almost Stepped On It

It blended in with the dry grass so well that I didn't see it & almost stepped on it. At the last moment it finally jumped. I watched where it landed and was able to get this shot before it took off again. Excellent camouflage. Experts said it was female & said females are more 'chunky' than the males. Males also have longer antennae.

Laying Eggs by Kaptured by Kala

Laying Eggs

Found this grasshopper laying eggs in the middle of a walking path that cuts thru the blackland prairie. A first for me. She ignored me and went about her egg laying. Apparently not a quick process, 15 minutes later I went on while she continued. The eggs will overwinter and hatch in the spring.

A little further down the boardwalk, we ran into this. Female on the bottom. Funny thing was, they were in the middle of a sunny spot with shadows framing them all around.
