Moya • Bear Hill

4 days before The Park Fire, what will it look like next time I stand here?
The fire started on the right hand side of the creek and down near the beginning of Upper Park.

Bear Hill • Humboldt Trail Upper Bidwell Park
This is the 2nd make shift bench, an improvment over the original.

In 2013 I saw a bear running up the hill in my direction. I was able to move down trail a bit and hide behind a boulder. Ever since that day I've called it Bear Hill.

Went to our favorite area of upper Upper Bidwell Park to check out part of the damage from the Santos Fire. This is on Guardians Trail between Humboldt Trail and 10 Mile House road.

Shawn and I went up to Humboldt Trail to check out the fire damage. The good news, the makeshift bench at Bear Hill is untouched by the fire. However 100 feet down Humboldt Trail is the Dozer Line and this fire hose cutting across the trail.

We plan to go back to our favorite area of the park after Labor Day Weekend to see the fire damage east on Guardians Trail.

2nd Racoon kill I've seen on Humboldt Trail this year. I'm not sure if the coyotes or mountain lions are doing the killing. This area of Upper Bidwell Park is obviously Coyote territory, so I suspect it's them that's taking out raccoons.

View from the makeshift bench on Humboldt Trail at the spot we call Bear Hill (because at this spot a few years ago, we saw a young bear charging toward us).

Shawn and I went for the 6 mile -/+ 1,000' vertical, Humboldt > Guardians > 10 Mile House > Annie Bidwell > Bloody Pin > Guardians > Humboldt Trails loop.

Our hike started with finding a raccoon carcass, completely eaten, on Humboldt Trail. All the water falls were flowing and the views as always were spectacular. As a bonus for the day, we were hailed on twice and rained on.

See before/after images and my notes on Lightroom 6 processing on my blog www.dougchurchill.com/blog/2016/2/031-366-2016-virga

"In meteorology, virga is an observable streak or shaft of precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates or sublimes before reaching the ground.[1] At high altitudes the precipitation falls mainly as ice crystals before melting and finally evaporating; this is often due to compressional heating, because the air pressure increases closer to the ground. It is very common in the desert and in temperate climates. In North America, it is commonly seen in the Western United States and the Canadian Prairies. It is also very common in the Middle East, Australia and North Africa.
Virga can cause varying weather effects, because as rain is changed from liquid to vapor form, it removes heat from the air due to the high heat of vaporization of water. In some instances, these pockets of colder air can descend rapidly, creating a dry microburst which can be extremely hazardous to aviation. Conversely, precipitation evaporating at high altitude can compressionally heat as it falls, and result in a gusty downburst which may substantially and rapidly warm the surface temperature. This fairly rare phenomenon, a heat burst, also tends to be of exceedingly dry air.
Virga also has a role in seeding storm cells whereby small particles from one cloud are blown into neighboring supersaturated air and act as nucleation particles for the next thunderhead cloud to begin forming.[citation needed]
The word is derived from Latin virga meaning "twig" or "branch"."

52 Weeks the 2015 Edition • "Nature"

The Manzanita trees are blooming.

"Manzanita is a common name for many species of the genus Arctostaphylos. They are evergreen shrubs or small trees present in the chaparral biome of western North America, where they occur from southern British Columbia and Washington to California, Arizona and New Mexico in the United States, and throughout Mexico. They are characterized by smooth, orange or red bark and stiff, twisting branches. There are 106 species of manzanita, 95 of which are found in the Mediterranean climate and colder mountainous regions of California, ranging from ground-hugging coastal and mountain species to small trees up to 20 feet (6m) tall. Manzanitas bloom in the winter to early spring and carry berries in spring and summer.[1] The berries and flowers of most species are edible.

The word manzanita is the Spanish diminutive of manzana (apple). A literal translation would be little apple. The name manzanita is also sometimes used to refer to species in the related genus Arbutus, which is known by that name in the Canadian area of the tree's range, but is more usually known as madroño, or madrone in the United States."

It had been sunny and warm in Chico until it was time shoot the environmental portraits for the June cover of North State Parent Magazine. Fortunatelythe rain held off and I made some cover worthy images on the Humboldt Trail in Upper Bidwell Park in Chico, CA.

The Eye.fi Pro X2 was an added bonus to enable me to show the talent their photos on my 10" tablet screen.
