Henry Ford Tipple the largest incline in the world 1923

Henry Ford bought the Nuttallburg Coal Mine in the 1920. He visited the site and walked and crawled 3 miles underground to learn how the mine operated. He made many improvements to the Nuttallburg Mine. Ford was a good man to the coal miners. He gave them the same hours and benefits that his auto workers had. To this day many West Virginians will only buy Ford Trucks. The railroads stymied Ford's plans for buying more mines by limiting the number of coal cars sent to his one mine for hauling coal. In 1928 Ford sold his mine.

Called the Eight Wonder of the World in 1902

The West Baden Springs Hotel has an incredible history of success, failure and a very expensive restoration. The dome has a 195' diameter and a height of 135.' Building this dome was deemed to be impossible. In 1902 the resort opened with its iconic dome. Over the years it served as not only a resort, but a hospital during WWI, a Jesuit Seminary and a college. Restored by the Cook family and the Indiana Historical Society. Now a luxurious resort. Architect Harrison Albright, then 35 yrs old and practicing in Charleston, West Virginia, said he would design the dome and resort complex. He went on to build many famous projects. Located in French Lick Township, population 574.

White's Mill on the Hocking River at Athens, Ohio

The first mill was built at this site in 1816. Floods destroyed the mill in 1884 resulting its being rebuilt in 1885. A water turbine, James P Leffel Company Springfield, Ohio, was installed in 1895. Mill production peaked in 1912 and later that year a fire destroyed the mill. The owner purchased the Nathan Vale mill near Pomroy, Ohio and moved it to this site. A new mill opened in 1915. A gift shop and nursery occupy the now shuttered mill.

Abandoned Sun Oil Company oilfield tank

The Sunoco's crude oil division used an experimental secondary recovery method on the northern tip of the Big Sinking Oilfield at Leeco, Kentucky in the late 1980's. A huge pressure plant was built with the capability of heating the water used to flood the oil sand. The project was on the White Heirs holdings. After about 6 years the oil lease was sold to a small independent producer who stripped what they could from the oil basin. By 2012 the process of scrapping the equipment began. Now, there is little that remains.

Shed at the Big Sinking Oilfield in Kentucky

Very basic design but strange that wood siding was used. Usually tin is used in the oilfields for siding. Note the rusting storage tank to right. Years ago many operators in the Big Sinking bought high sulphur natural gas and injected the gas, secondary recovery, into the oil sands to increase production. Years later water flooding was used and the water and sulphur mixed, creating sulphuric acid, that ate the mental tanks and fittings.

Appears that this jack dated to the 1940's. Runs on a 4 cycle gasoline engine. The age of the jack gives no indication of how old the oil well is. The counter weights indicate a deep well. Note the strip garden behind the well running parallel to the dry creek>
