Red house on rocky bluff

Building houses in the Arctic comes with many challenges. This red house is built on a ventilated concrete foundation on bedrock to avoid the instabilities associated with melting permafrost. Bright colours are preferred and houses are built of wood and concrete imported from Denmark. Utilities for this house are carried in above ground insulated pipes. Dunollie castle

The first fortifications on a promontory north of Oban date back to the early middle ages. All that remains of the ruins of Dunollie Castle is the 15th C tower, perched on a the rocky bluff, Argyll, Scotland. Trees grown up around the bluff are starting to obscure it.

Root cellar and dandelions

On the Bonavista peninsula you can still see houses with root cellars, which originated before refrigeration as a way to keep root vegetables (carrots, turnips, beets, parsnips, potatoes) fresh through the winter months. Nowadays there is a revival of interest in this ancient practice. Next to a colourful shed and abandoned dory and old root cellar is built into the rocky treeless bluff above the harbour at Trinity, Newfoundland. Old salt box houses can be seen on the top of the bluff.

Into the Clouds

An HDR image of some rocky bluffs off the North Klondike Highway near Whitehorse. The road is in fairly typical winter driving condition and one must be carefull when stopping to take a photo like this. There are few pulloffs and limited visibility making stopped vehicles and photographers on the road potential hazards for fellow drivers.

Stop! This is in Colour.

Its winter in the Yukon and colour really stands out in our mostly white/grey world. Here, the low clouds almost touch the snow and only a red "Stop" sign stands in the way of a scene that would hardly look different if shot in B&W.
