ANDALUSIAN ASTROLABIUM BY IBN SAID (11TH CENTURY) 2017

(From my own archived digital photos, 2017)

This astrolabe, which would delight any astronomical navigation enthusiast, is in a display case at the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) in Madrid, Spain.

The explanatory text on the MAN website reads:

This Andalusian astrolabe has five plates that serve for 11 latitudes, among which those corresponding to Mecca, Toledo, and Seville stand out.

Its spider has indicators for 24 stars.

On the back, it is engraved with the zodiacal calendar, the shadow square, and an inscription in Kufic characters with the name of its creator (Ibrahim ibn Sa'id al-Shali, famous Andalusian astronomer) and its construction date: 459 AH (1067 AD).

Its alidade and front slab are from a later period.

Detail of the functioning astrolabe on Deck 3. I don't know if it's accurate, seeing as how the ship is constantly moving and changing course, but the parts rotate.
