Here are a bunch of untamed Christmas trees out in the wild in their natural habitat. As you can see, these feral trees have adorned themselves in red and green, consistent with the colors of the holiday. And they have staked out a position in the optimal location such that right before sunset they have caught the day's fading light and illuminated as if they had been wrapped in tiny light bulbs. The white bark of the dying firs has mimicked the sparkle of tinsel. Out of camera to the left, one tree has draped itself with candy canes. To the right, another has secured an angel on its crown. By the end of the season, they will have wound tiny toy trains around the bases of their trunks. If left to their own devices, they will decorate themselves. It is their nature.

I made this photo from Zeacliff, one of my favorite viewpoints in the White Mountains. The light scraped across the top of the canopy revealing the rich texture of the treetops. This photo feels dry and prickly to me. The trees are almost crispy. I can imagine needles dropping as the branches scrape up against me as I scoot by along the trail.

The red tree in the top center is what drew me to the composition. It seems like the leader of the group. The captain of the team.

It's clearly dying. I'm not an expert, but I know there are a lot of challenges to the fir trees right now, like the invasive wooly adelgid bug. I remember seeing the damage those little bugs had wrought across the Smoky Mountains when we visited back in 2019. From Clingman's Dome I saw a vast swath of dead firs. I like the photo, but there is a bit of sadness to it.
