Spring

from the archives'

The coming of spring can seem like it takes forever. we patiently wait for the first signs and they appear so slowly, the buds on the end of the branches get slowly bigger until one day they burst open in a glorious explosion of bright fresh green leaves. this shot taken in early spring 2022 was one of those days.

The Garden - Pickford House.

Pickford House is one of three 'Derby Museums' sites, and focuses on the domestic lifestyle and fashions in the Georgian era.
Designed by, and formerly the home of the renowned Derby architect, Joseph Pickford. It is the jewel in Derby's historic Friargate Quarter crown.
An A4 Watercolour sketch inspired by the jucstaposition of old and modern buildings within the scene and the impact created by the bright spring sunshine being reflected of the surrounding structures. Painted en plein air, during a recent Derby Sketching Club visit to the museum.

Forest Trail..

It was so quiet in the park. no movemnet and not a sound except the rustling of the dried leavs on the trees and the crunch of the dead dried leaves under our feet. It was remarkably peacful. It felt like we were walking in a black and white and shades of grey world...as evrything apeared in dull greys except the fir trees ahead with a faint glow of green.

Elm Hill Norwich 6419

Elm Hill area, Norwich. St Peter Hungate is grade 1 listed, the church was decommisioned in 1936 (when it became the first church to be repurposed) and was transformed into a museum, grade 1 listed, it is dated 1406. Elm Hill is the most complete street from old Norwich. It is mentioned as far back as 1200, and many of the buildings are Tudor, dating from a rebuild following a major fire in 1507, but some incorporate earlier parts. It was nearly demolished in a 'slum clearance' attempt in 1926, but was spared and gradually restored by the City Council, after intervention by the Norwich Society.

Rocks And Reeds..

It was a moody day for photography, the frozen lake undulating with ice moving above its still unfrozen depths. The bitter winter wind pulled at our clothes, the cold stinging our cheeks, our eyes watered from the biting cold and the dampness could be felt through our multiple layers of clothing.

The sky was pale blue with wisps of ash grey brushed in, as if painted by a group of seven artist.

The wind howled through the reeds ahead of us across the rocks picking up icy snow off the lake and flinging it us; as if it were telling us it was time for us to leave this place.

L2025_0873 The Lever Tomb - Port Sunlight by www.jhluxton.com - John H. Luxton Photography

L2025_0873 The Lever Tomb - Port Sunlight

The tombs of Lord Leverhulme (d. 1925) and his wife (d. 1913) , feature Goscombe John’s bronze effigies on black marble tombs with his bronze figures of children at their base and are located in a loggia built on to the wall of Christ Church, United Reform Church which serves the village of Port Sunlight which was established by William Hesketh Lever.

For more photographs of the Industrial Model Village of Port Sunlight please click here :www.jhluxton.com/England/Merseyside/Wirral/Port-Sunlight

Loggia built against the west wall of Christ Church, Portlight, houses the tombs Sir William Goscombe John paid his final tribute his friends and patrons with serene effigies and the sculpture their feet.

The couple left behind only an adult son and had no grandchildren at the time of Lever's death, so the children may symbolize a general of loss.

The the Gothic loggia was designed for this purpose in 1905, though built only after the first death of Lady Lever.

The Loggia was the work of William and Segar Owen, the same architects who had completed Christ Church itself in 1904.
