Dawn final issue cover

This is the final issue cover of Dawn monthly magazine, number 106/7, New Year 1985.

For some photos of Corrymeela and Glencree from this issue see www.flickr.com/photos/innateireland/51239061585/in/album-...

Dawn magazine ran as a monthly (well, 10 issues a year) from 1974 to the start of 1985, although Dawn as an organisation continued for a couple of years more and produced some issues of 'Dawn Train' occasional magazine (the latter became part of INNATE in 1987 before ceasing production). Copies of Dawn Train - but not Dawn maagazine - are on the INNATE website at www.innatenonviolence.org/news/index.shtml and click on 'Dawn Train' at the bottom of the 'Nonviolent News' issues listing on the left.

"The Mysterious Traveler Mystery Reader" No. 5 (1952). Digest size. Final issue. Cover Art by Norman Saunders

Grace Publishing's Mysterious Traveler digest-sized magazine ran for five issues with cover paintings by famed pulp illustrator Norman Saunders. A spin-off of the Mysterious Traveler radio show (1943-1952), it ran the gamut from fantasy and science fiction to straight crime dramas of mystery and suspense. The radio show began each week with the lonely sound of a distant locomotive and the malevolent narrator who introduced himself in the following manner:

“This is the Mysterious Traveler, inviting you to join me on another journey into the strange and terrifying. I hope you will enjoy the trip, that it will thrill you a little and chill you a little. So settle back, get a good grip on your nerves and be comfortable—if you can!” [Source: Wikipedia]

"If" was an American science fiction magazine launched in March 1952 by Quinn Publications, owned by James L. Quinn.

The magazine was moderately successful, though it was never considered to be in the first tier of science fiction magazines. It achieved its greatest success under editor Frederik Pohl, winning the Hugo Award for best professional magazine three years running from 1966 to 1968. "If" published many award-winning stories over its 22 years, including Robert A. Heinlein's novel "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress," and Harlan Ellison's short story "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". The most prominent writer to make his first sale to "If" was Larry Niven, whose story "The Coldest Place" appeared in the December 1964 issue.

"If" was merged into "Galaxy Science Fiction" after the December 1974 issue, its 175th issue overall. [Source: Wikipedia]

Planet Stories Vol. 6, No. 11 (Summer 1955). The Final Issue. Cover by Kelly Freas

“Planet Stories” was launched at the same time as “Planet Comics” and ran for 71 issues between 1939 and 1955. It didn’t pay enough to attract the best authors to its pages on a regular basis but it did manage to attract well-known names on occasion, including Ray Bradbury, Leigh Brackett, Isaac Asimov, Clifford Simak and Philip K. Dick. The artwork emphasized attractive women, with scantily clad damsels in distress or alien princesses on almost every cover.

Newsweek's last print issue has just a hashtag on the cover. #LastPrintIssue
Like using your final breath to ID the killer.

What do you think put the Newsweek print edition out of business? Was it social media? Was it the content? Or...?

Final Edition of The Rocky Mountain News

Denver is no longer a two newspaper town. The final issue of the almost 150-year-old Rocky Mountain News newspaper came out today. It is a sad day, a red-letter day, for the Denver, Colorado USA. The first issue was printed on April 23, 1859 by founder William N. Byers.

I learned to read using the Rocky Mountain News. I am honored to have been featured in the paper at one time. The newspaper in my novel is patterned after the RMN.

A piece of history died today.
