Scout the Gnome 4.

BOGART: "So you see Paddy! This is where I thought I saw, Scout, but it can't be, can it? He didn't answer when I called his name. Listen." *Pauses.* "Scout! Scout! Scout it's time to come inside.*

SCOUT: *Remains silent.*

BOGART: "What do you think Jago?"

JAGO: "Well, it does look a bit like Scout, and Dolly too, but although Dolly has a red cap, Scout doesn't, and neither Scout nor Dolly have fluffy cotton wool beards."

SCOUT: *Remains silent.*

JAGO: "What do you think Freddy?"

FREDDY: *Sniffs Scout.*

SCOUT: *Remains silent.*

FREDDY: "Well, it smells like Scout, but perhaps it is a close relative. Scout is usually so talkative!" *Ponders.* "What do you think, Cousin Paddington?"

SCOUT: *Remains silent.*

COUSIN PADDINGTON: *Looks at Paddy and winks.* "Oh I'm sure you're right, Freddy. This can't be Scout."

PADDY: "Oh, that's a pity, Cousin Paddington."

COUSIN PADDINGTON: "Why is that Paddy?"

SCOUT: *Eyes dart to Paddy, but still remains silent.*

PADDY: "Because it's afternoon tea time."

SCOUT: *Starts to tremble, but remains silent.*

PADDY: "Oh well, we shall have to eat his share of delicious jam fancies and chocolate biscuits between all of us."

SCOUT: "Jam fancies! Chocolate biscuits! No! Wait!"

PADDY: "Oh, so it is you, Scout!"

SCOUT: "Yes, I was playing gnomes with mijn beste vriend Peter, but you have to be quiet and not speak. That's why I didn't answer you, Bogart. I'm sorry."

BOGART: "Oh that's alright, Scout. I'm just glad it is you!"

PADDY: "Come on everybear, it's time for afternoon tea."

SCOUT: "I have to go inside now, Peter mijn beste vriend. It's time for tea and biscuits. Come with me and have some too. I love sharing with you Peter, mijn beste vriend! Ik hou zoooooo veel van jou! Berenkusjes van Scout, je allerbeste vriend! All this standing around and being quiet gives me a grumbly tummy! Grumbly tummy Paddy! Grumbly tummy!" *Rubs tummy vigorously.*

PADDY: "Come along, Scout."

SCOUT: "May I wear my hat and beard, Paddy?"

PADDY: "You can wear you hat, but you and Dolly might like to take off your beards so they don't get biscuit crumbs in them."

SCOUT: "Oh, alright Paddy."

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy (www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/) . Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Peter is indeed pretending to be a garden gnome, and he is doing a very good job of it. You can see the picture www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/52078540825/in/datepos..., or in the first comment below. Peter has asked Scout to play with him, so I made him a pointy red hat out of paper and a fluffy beard for he and Dolly out of cotton wool.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Jago is a recent addition to my ever-growing family. A gift from a dear friend in England, he is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a long while. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.

Freddy Fox is made by Merrythought in England. I bought him, of all places, from a men’s accessory shop in Melbourne’s Block Arcade, called Mr. Wares. Freddy Fox is made of English Mohair with felt paws and glass bead eyes. He has so much charm and charisma that already he is winning hearts with anyone whom he meets, and he is kind and sweet, which makes him an ideal member of our family.

SCOUT: “Peter! Peter mijn beste vriend! Look! Daddy has made me a gnome outfit! Look! I have a tall red hat that Daddy made for me from pretty red paper, and I have a beard made from the softest and fluffiest cotton wool! Do you think I look like a garden gnome? I think I do!” *Trembles with excitement.* “Now we can play together in the garden!”

DADDY: “Oh Scout, I’m afraid that you and Peter can’t play gnomes in the garden.”

SCOUT: “Why not Daddy?” *Surprised.*

DADDY: “Because it is raining outside, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Oh Daddy!” *Disappointed.* “What can I do?”

DADDY: “Well, I do have a lovely pop-up book of gnomes which has a beautiful garden in it. Perhaps you might like to play with that until the sun comes out again.”

SCOUT: “Oh, can we Daddy? That would be wonderful!”

DADDY: “Of course, Scout. I’ll go get it for you.” *Goes and fetches book for Scout.*

SCOUT: “Oh what a wonderful book, Daddy! Look! There is a pretty garden, just like you said, and it is full of gnomes playing! How exciting!” *Jumps up and down with joy.* “Look Peter, mijn beste vriend! Now we can play gnomes even though it is raining outside! I promise that as soon as it is sunny again, we will go outside and play gnomes in the real garden. Ik hou zoooooo veel van jou! Berenkusjes van Scout, je allerbeste vriend!”

Scout is playing with my pop-up book of Gnomes with text by Wil Huygen and illustrated by Rein Poortvliet published by Harry N. Abrams in 1979, adapted from Wil Huygen and Rein Poortvliet’s book, Gnomes published by Harry N. Abrams in 1977.

Scout the Gnome 1.

SCOUT: “Hullo everybody! Guess what? Mijn best vriend Peter has decided to dress up like a garden gnome with a beard and a tall red hat! He looks very authentic. He has invited me to play garden gnomes with him, but I don’t have a tall pointed red hat like he has or a fluffy beard, so I have asked Daddy if he can help make me one. I am doing some research about gnomes in a big book that Daddy has which he is letting me look through.

Look! Gnomes have tall red hats, just like in the picture. Daddy is going to make me one out of red paper. Dolly is going to play gnomes with me, but she doesn’t need Daddy to make her a hat, because she already has a red pointed hat. And look, gnomes have funny fluffy beards. Daddy says that he will make me one out of cotton wool! He is going to make one for Dolly too, because Dolly doesn’t have a fluffy beard.

Oh, and look! It says that gnomes are fifteen centimetres in height without their hats. Well, I am seventeen centimetres tall, so I think that makes me just perfect gnome height! How exciting!”

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy (www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/) .
