Casas coloridas

The colorful houses next to the Albufeira Lagoon, in Sesimbra, were originally installed by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests in the 1990s to support shellfish gatherers and fishermen. The photograph, taken in 2023, records the state prior to the requalification that took place in January 2025, transforming the complex into the Center for Environmental and Sports Activities. This space started to function as a hub for the promotion of water sports and leisure, with a focus on teaching canoeing and sailing, ensuring the continuity of the work developed by the Municipal Center for Nautical Activities.

Water vole

Water voles (Arvicola amphibius) are semi-aquatic rodents found along rivers, streams, and wetlands. They have chestnut-brown fur, a blunt nose, small ears, and a furry tail, making them distinct from brown rats. Water voles are herbivores, feeding on grasses, reeds, and waterside vegetation. They are known for their burrowing behavior, creating tunnels in riverbanks with underwater entrances.
Sadly, water voles have suffered a significant decline due to habitat loss and predation by invasive American mink. They are now considered one of the UK's most endangered mammals. Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration and controlling mink populations to protect these important ecosystem engineers.
