“Box Camera” by Charles Hargens on the cover of “The Saturday Evening Post,” March 4, 1933.

“Over the course of his career, Charles Hargens (1893-1997) was commissioned to produce illustrations for over 300 books and 3,000 magazines. He illustrated for ‘The Saturday Evening Post,’ ‘Open Road,’ ‘Farm Journal,’ and others. He created advertising illustrations for Stetson Hats, Atwater Kent, and beer companies, and created many historical paintings of the American Revolution. In 1982 Hargens was granted an honorary doctorate degree in fine arts from the Dakota Wesleyan University of Mitchell, South Dakota. Hargens created three covers for ‘The Saturday Evening Post.’”— SaturdayEveningPost.com

Galena Creek Schoolhouse by South Dakota National Register of Historic Places

Galena Creek Schoolhouse

The Galena Creek Schoolhouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on February 7, 2023. Photographs from nomination, December 2021.

Few early settlement-period schoolhouses in the Black Hills are extant. The Galena Creek Schoolhouse (c.1877) is comprised of two volumes: a hand-hewn, one-room log building and a wood-frame addition (c.1950). It is constructed of hewn logs joined with square notching. Tool markings from broad ax/adze use can be seen on the logs. Interstices are daubed with Portland cement; daubing has weathered out of some interstices exposing a variety of historic chinking materials including wood slats and soil/clay. The foundation is a combination of stone and concrete patches. It is a significant example of log building traditions that occurred during the Euro-American settlement of South Dakota. The log structure demonstrates once common but now rare construction techniques.

It stopped being a school around 1882. From about 1892 until 1950, Dr. C.W. Hargens and his family used the cabin occasionally for hunting, fishing, and vacation purposes. Around 1950, the Hargens family built the addition and lived there fulltime.

Charles Hargens (1893-1997) was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota and as young boy he loved to draw cowboys, Indians and ranch buildings. By age ten, he was selling drawings of neighbors’ barns and houses for $25. By the early 1920s, he began to produce illustrations for book jackets, books, magazines and advertisements. His career took off and soon his illustrations of cowboys, Indians, Western life, Revolutionary War action and boy scout themes appeared in, or adorned the covers of “The Saturday Evening Post,” “Collier’s,” “Liberty,” “McCall’s,” “Boy’s Life,” and “Gentlemen’s Quarterly.” His work also appeared on billboards and ads for Stetson hats and Coca-Cola.
