A fine view of Bad Creek was afforded by a bridge on a country road in Fulton County, Ohio, one day in early November. by Tim Kiser

A fine view of Bad Creek was afforded by a bridge on a country road in Fulton County, Ohio, one day in early November.

It's a Fulton County performance tradition to mirthfully disparage Bad Creek. Ask the locals how Bad Creek got its name and they'll spin you a witty yarn about how what an awful creek it is.

-----------------------

In Swan Creek Township near Delta, Ohio, on November 2nd, 2024, was Bad Creek as viewed from a bridge on the south side of Township Road EF.

Bad Creek flows to the Maumee River, which flows to Maumee Bay in Lake Erie.

The Tiffin River was getting kinda sloppy-lookin this November 2nd. by Tim Kiser

© Tim Kiser, all rights reserved.

The Tiffin River was getting kinda sloppy-lookin this November 2nd.

Nah I am just kidding, it had been kinda sloppy-lookin since long before November 2nd.

Don't many of us humans find the Tiffin River's soft mudbars uninviting?

According to this report from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, "the Tiffin River mainstem [was historically] subject to significant channel and riparian area modification. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the mainstem and many of the tributaries were systematically modified. Channel modifications may have included removal of natural meanders, relocation of the active channel, dredging activities, and removal of riparian vegetation."

Based on satellite imagery, I suspect that this segment of the river was relocated to bypass a meander.

In German Township in Fulton County, Ohio, on November 2nd, 2024, was the Tiffin River as viewed from the north side of a bridge on the Wabash Cannonball Trail, concurrently a segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail, between U.S. Route 20A and Ohio State Route 66.

The Tiffin River flows to the Maumee River, which flows to Lake Erie, and so on over Niagara Falls &c &c. It was named in honor of Governor Edward Tiffin.

Has the Auglaize River in northwestern Ohio won you over with its prettiness yet. by Tim Kiser

Has the Auglaize River in northwestern Ohio won you over with its prettiness yet.

I am not yet convinced it is pretty. Also I think "Auglaize" should be pronounced "oh-GLAY-zee" instead of "AW-glaze," which sounds awful to my ears, and which clumsily interrupts the rhythm and flow of any phrase or sentence in which it occurs.

Spring 2020 skunk cabbage. by Tim Kiser

Spring 2020 skunk cabbage.

Unfortunately we are not allowed to eat the beautiful leaves raw in salads, because they would cause our poor oral mucosa to burn and swell.

"Ouch, those leaves are full of calcium oxalate crystals!" we might be unable to exclaim, on account of our mouths and throats being all swollen up from the skunk cabbage leaves we ate. Can you imagine!

Ah the Norfolk Southern Railway, I see it. I still remember when it was the Wabash Railroad.

The St. Marys River is one of the most popularly beloved water amenities of both the state of Indiana and the entire Lake Erie drainage basin of the U.S. and Canada. by Tim Kiser

The St. Marys River is one of the most popularly beloved water amenities of both the state of Indiana and the entire Lake Erie drainage basin of the U.S. and Canada.

The river was named in honor of the famous legend of "Virgin Mary." Indiana people come to the river to stare dumbly at its muddy water as they recall personally meaningful versions of her apocryphal story.

Indiana plant jumble at creekbank. by Tim Kiser

Indiana plant jumble at creekbank.

The creekbank is super-steep because it was machine-made during a creek-straightening project undertaken by long-dead Indianans. We are all clapping our hands for the trees, in hopes that their muscular roots might slowly succeed in undoing the Indianans' misguided effort.

Ah yes here was the stream "Black Creek" in the Lake Erie drainage basin in northern Indiana in late January. by Tim Kiser

Ah yes here was the stream "Black Creek" in the Lake Erie drainage basin in northern Indiana in late January.

Black Creek hurries its bad load of Indiana's worst agroindustrial poisons toward Lake Erie, via its machine-carved late 19c-early 20c bad steep-bankèd channel. Ugh!

Saw a mild river from a modest blufftop. by Tim Kiser

Saw a mild river from a modest blufftop.

I am a huge secularist but nevertheless I find the St. Joseph River (seen here!) attractive.

"In 1889, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Quamquam pluries in which he urged Catholics to pray to Joseph as patron of the Church... He prescribed that every October, a prayer to Saint Joseph be added to the Rosary, with attached indulgences," ugh, this is nonsense, I'm a secularist looking at a river.

Cedar Creek is attractive this morning but "Cedar Creek" is not a good name for it because there are not any cedars.

Unfortunately this being Indiana I figure any kind of renaming drive would probably end up getting dominated by rightwing reactionary politics, so I am just gonna stay quiet about it.
