Sentry boxes and crowded pediments by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Sentry boxes and crowded pediments

Starting this week with an image from the Joshua H. Hargrave Collection! An official looking building with a number of sentry boxes and an abundance of statues and figures on the pediments of the building. The "bridge" leading out is unusual and may be distinctive enough to help us with location or to give some idea of what it is?

Based on input from sharon.corbet, Beachcomber, derangedlemur, Vab2009 and in particular Niall McAuley we have 99.9% confirmation that this was taken in continental Europe. The sentry boxes (un-Irish) and sun shades (very un-Irish) were key give-aways. The consensus is that it is a shot (probably reversed in our catalogue) of the City Palace (Stadtschloss) in Potsdam, Germany. Hargrave captures it here in the late 19th or very early 20th century. It was significantly damaged during WWII - but thankfully later restored (albeit without the adornments we see here)....

Camp, Birr, Co. Offaly by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Camp, Birr, Co. Offaly

And faithfully following French's journey in the Faithful County we have a military camp with serried lines of "bell tents" inside/outside a military base. This was either when the army were on a war footing or when manoeuvres were underway. Is it at the extreme end of the Lawrence range or earlier, perhaps during the Boer War?

Various contributors (including swordscookie and beachcomberaustralia) confirm that this is Crinkill Barracks in Birr. Niall McAuley suggests that it may have been captured from "upon high" nearby. Flickr user Stephen Callaghan captured some similar photos of the barracks very recently, and has since confirmed that this was the main gate, and likely captured from atop the barrack block. Stephen tells us that the camp-area was known as the "Fourteen Acres", and "was used for parades, training and sports"....

Pall Mall

On the right just out of shot is Marlborough Road and at this time known as Marlborough Gate. The Road was opened to the public in 1856 and in 1925 a pavement was added to the west side after complaints were made about the dangerous approach to the crossing on The Mall at the infamous 61 traffic. The entrance to Marlborough House can be seen on the right with the sentry boxes outside, since 1863 it had been the home of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. The building next to the entrance is The Guards Club which dates from 1875, as it overlooked Marlborough House it was built with blind window openings on that side. The lack of natural light forced the club to move to a sunnier aspect after only three years; the building was demolished in 1930 and replaced by two banks. It may have been at this time when the entrance to Marlborough House was pushed back to the St. James’s Palace building line; or it may have something to do with damage caused to one of the banks during the blitz.
The building on the left at the corner of Pall Mall and St. James’s Street is by Norman Shaw, the architect of New Scotland Yard and dates from 1882. The building behind the cameraman was replaced by another Norman Shaw building in1903.
