Un Été Au Havre is a recurring summer event in Le Havre. It is an event with art, heritage, and culture that is revitalized every year by new contemporary artworks installed in public space from late June to mid-September. The event was first held in 2017 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city and the port, which attracted more than two million visitors. The event has since become a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, with a wide range of contemporary art installations and exhibitions throughout the city. Over the years, a permanent collection has been built up, which is enriched every summer, gradually transforming the city into an open-air exhibition of contemporary art, accessible to all.
“Monsieur Goéland” was Stephan Balkenhol’s 2020 season of Un Été Au Havre. The man with the head of a gull, a painted bronze sculpture measuring 2.80m, is placed on a perch of 3.20m. He wears a peacoat, the emblematic garment of seafarers: sailors, fishermen, pirates.
Stephan Balkenhol, Professor of Sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, is a German artist, famous for his figurative painted wooden sculptures and reliefs.
