This photograph captures the serene beauty of Stintenburg, a historic estate situated on an island in the Schaalsee lake, within the Biosphärenreservat Schaalsee in northern Germany. The estate’s classical architecture, surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil waters, reflects its rich and varied past.
Dating back to the 13th century, Stintenburg has been under the stewardship of several noble families, including the Counts of Schwerin and the von Bernstorff family. The current manor house, constructed between 1810 and 1817, is believed to have been designed by the renowned architect Joseph Christian Lillie.
In the 20th century, the estate witnessed significant historical events. During World War II, its owner, Albrecht Graf von Bernstorff, was arrested by the Nazi regime and later perished in Berlin-Moabit. Post-war, the estate fell within the Soviet Occupation Zone and was repurposed by the East German authorities. Notably, from 1973 to 1986, it served as a covert training center for elite border reconnaissance units under the Ministry for State Security (Stasi).
Today, Stintenburg is once again in the possession of the von Bernstorff family. The island and its surroundings are part of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, emphasizing conservation and the harmonious coexistence of history and nature. The estate stands as a testament to the region’s layered history, offering a peaceful retreat into Germany’s cultural and natural heritage.
Note: Access to the island is restricted to protect its natural environment and private property. Visitors are advised to respect these limitations and enjoy the surrounding biosphere reserve through designated pathways and observation points.
