Some two months before the end of steam on British Rail, Stanier Black Fives 44871 and 44735 are stabled on Carnforth Shed (10A) on 11 June 1968. Both had spent their last years in the North West, 44871 at Stockport, Bolton and finally Carnforth, 44735 at Trafford Park, Newton Heath and Carnforth. They both worked to the end in early August 1968, but then their paths diverged as 44871 was purchased for preservation and 44735 was towed away for scrap.

Ex-LMS/BR 5MT 4-6-0 44735 at Brunswick Goods sidings on a misty day in May 1965, during the RCTS 'Cheshire Lines Centenarian' railtour..
The loco had entered service in 1949, and was withdrawn at the end of BR steam, in August 1968, and scrapped in November. Eighteen of the class have been preserved, but not all of these have been restored..
Today (2024) this has all gone, and the site is partly occupied by a gym and a car dealership..
Restored and cropped/enlarged from an under-exposed portrait-mode original..

I managed to miss the end of steam but someone kindly took a few photos of the fledgling Carnforth depot right at the end of steam. I was more interested in the preservation side!

Other than the 'Titfield Thunderbolt' inscription it says that the loco is bound for Drapers Yard at Hull which scrapped locos but also was the base for 5305 in the early years, so I'm assuming that the other note which says for use on the YMRS [NYMR] never came to fruition and the loco was scrapped. Can anyone add to this locos history?
