Taken in about 1960
Clean ex-LSWR Beattie Well-Tank 2-4-0WT 30586 with a grubby BR Conflat at Wadebridge station yard, on a rainy day in around 1960, with the distinctive clock tower of the Town Hall in the background..
It entered service – looking very different – in 1875, and was withdrawn – together with the other two remaining members of the class – in December 1962. The other two have survived, but this loco was, eventually, scrapped in March 1964..
Wadebridge station lost its passenger service in January 1967, and freight services ended in 1978. Today (2025) this location is occupied by houses and a car park...
Restored from an under-exposed cyan-colour-shifted original..

Ex-LBSC Billington E6 0-6-2T 32408 at Feltham loco shed, on a bright sunny day in March 1962.
The loco had entered service in 1904, and was withdrawn – with the other two remaining members of the class - in December 1962, and scrapped in February 1963. None of the class have survived.
Feltham shed closed in 1967, and today (2025) the site is occupied by an industrial estate.

37431 'Sir Powys / County of Powys' departs Barmouth in August 1989.
Originally D6972 becoming 37272 prior to being refurbished.
Cut up at Wigan CRDC in August 2000.
The working is the Pwllheli to London Euston service. I'm assuming this is the afternoon working given the position of the sun.
Another 35mm slide which has been scanned. Purchased from Paul Robertson. Photographer not known.

Ex-LNER Gresley/Thompson A1/1 60113 ''Great Northern'' near Wortley, Leeds on a foggy day in May 1962.
This had entered service with the Great Northern Railway in 1922, as the first of the new Gresley pacifics..
It was - controversially - chosen by Thonpson to be completely rebuilt into the first of his new design of pacifics in 1945, and appeared in a unique dark-blue livery with red lining, and short cab. It was soon further modified, with a standard A3 cab and smoke deflectors, as seen here, and remained a unique member of its class.. It was withdrawn in November 1962, and scrapped.
Restored from a very-under-exposed unfocussed grainy magenta-colour-shifted original..

Taken on August 3rd 1968
Grimy ex-LMS Stanier 5MT 4-6-0 44874 at Lostock Hall shed on the day before the official end of regular steam on BR, with a selection of chalk messages..
The loco had entered service in April 1945, and – despite its condition seen here – was thoroughly cleaned up, with replacement number plate, and hauled one of the 'last day' railtours the very next day:
www.flickr.com/photos/rgadsdon/28761022016/
It was then withdrawn, and scrapped in April 1969… Eighteen examples of the class have survived, but not all of these have been restored..
The shed closed down in August 1968, and today (2025), the buildings have all been demolished, and the site is derelict, and overgrown.
Restored from an under-exposed unfocussed cyan-colour-shifted original..
