Paddington, Scout and the Barbie Dream Camper Van 3.

PADDY: “I am still not convinced that this pink camper van you found on the side of the road was supplied by the faeries, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Of course it’s the faeries, Paddy! They brought it for me! The faeries took pity on me because you couldn’t turn that pumpkin into a Scoutarella coach, Paddy...”

PADDY: “Well, I never actually said I had any magic, Scout.”

SCOUT: “So they magicked up this wonderful pink camper van, just for us. It was just sitting here under the tree, waiting to be driven.”

PADDY: “I’m really not convinced. I think it belongs to someone else, like some Barbies who have gone to get provisions.”

ROSIE: “But there are plenty of provisions in the refrigerator, Paddy.” *Points to refrigerator with paw.*

SCOUT: “Oh pooh, Paddy! I’m going to keep exploring!” *Walks around to the other side of the camper van.*

BOGART: “I’m sure there are no Barbies about to lay claim to this camper van, Paddy.”

ROSIE: “I agree with Bogart, Paddy.”

PADDY: *Shakes head.*

SCOUT: *Squeals with excitement.* “Paddy! Bogart! Rosie! Come! Come quickly!”

BOGART: “What is it, Scout?” *Hurries around the other side of the camper van to where Scout’s squeal comes from.*

ROSIE: “What did you find, Scout?” *Follow Bogart.*

PADDY: “What is it, Scout? Are you alright?” *Follows Bogart and Rosie.*

SCOUT: “Of course I’m alright, Paddy! Why is it that every time I squeal, you think something is wrong?”

PADDY: “Usually because something is wrong, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Oh!” *Puts paw to mouth thoughtfully.* “Well this time I am excited!”

ROSIE: “Why Scout?”

SCOUT: “Because this camper van has everything! It even has a…” *Lowers voice.* “A Lady Louisa for when we have to go…”

PADDY: “Ahem!” *Clears throat.* “Yes, we know what everybear does in the Lady Louisa, Scout.”

SCOUT: “And even better, the Lady Louisa has a pink seat!” *Lifts toilet seat.*

ROSIE: “Look there is even a roll of loo paper! How kind the faeries are to think of our every comfort: food, drink and loo paper!”

BOGART: “And there is a vanity basin too! It has taps!”

SCOUT: “Oh! And pictures on the wall! Look!” *Points to pictures of Barbies.*

PADDY: “Hhhmmm…” *Ponders seriously.*

BOGART: “Well I don’t think that is in the best of taste for the bathroom.” *Tuts and shakes head.* “A nice painting of a landscape, but not photographs! They’d be looking at you whilst you are doing your… err… your business! That’s creepy!”

PADDY: “Hhhmmm…” *Ponders more seriously.*

ROSIE: “I agree, Bogart! I don’t want to sit on the Lady Louisa and have Barbies watching me!”

PADDY: “Hhhmmm…” *Ponders more seriously still.*

SCOUT: “Don’t worry, Bogart and Rosie! We can just take them down as part of the camper van redecoration we will do to it! We need to put our paw stamp on the interiors.” *Nods seriously.* “So long as we don’t remove too much pink. I like pink. But the photographs can go.”

PADDY: “But Scout, why are there photographs hanging up in the bathroom in the first place?”

SCOUT: “What do you mean, Paddy?”

PADDY: “If what you say is right and the faeries left this camper van for us to find, why are there photographs of Barbies on the wall?”

VOICE FROM A NEARBY GARDEN: “Hey! Hey that’s my camper van! What are you bears doing in it?”

PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART and ROSIE: *All turn to where the voice comes from and sees a grumpy little girl with a red and ugly face clutching several Barbies.*

PADDY: “Oh-oh!”

LITTLE GIRL: *Gasps.* “Bear invaders!”

ROSIE: “Oh dear!” *Puts paws to mouth.*

LITTLE GIRL: “Come on Barbies! Let’s get ‘em!”

SCOUT: “Time to go, I think!”

LITTLE GIRL: *Runs towards Paddy, Scout, Bogart, Rosie and the camper van.*

PADDY: “Run!!!!!”

PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART and ROSIE: *All run as fast as their little paws will carry them, into the safety of Daddy’s arms.*

SCOUT: “I guess you were right, Paddy,” *Looks from the security of Daddy’s arms at the scowling little girl who eyes Scout with hostile eyes.* “The faeries didn’t bring the camer van for us.” *Disappointed.*

PADDY: “I told you so, Scout!” *Snuggles against daddy’s chest for further protection from the scowling little girl.*

ROSIE: “That is sooooo disappointing!” *Sad.*

BOGART: “And it was an American model too, just like me!” *Sighs.*

DADDY: “Don’t worry everybear. Let’s go home and leave the little girl and her Barbies to their camper van. We have something at home that they don’t.”

PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART and ROSIE: “What Daddy?”

DADDY: “Afternoon tea!”

PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART and ROSIE: “Afternoon tea! Hoorah! Grumbly tummies Daddy! Grumbly tummies!” *Rub tummies vigorously.*

Imagine the delight of Paddy, Scout, Bogart and Rosie when, whilst on a walk with me the other day, they came across a Barbie Dream Camper Van from 2017, left out on the footpath along with some other toys for anyone… or anybear to take! Recycling at its best… or so they thought!

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

PADDY: “So where do you think this pink camper van you found on the side of the road has come from, Scout?”

SCOUT: “I told you Paddy! It’s the faeries! They brought it for me! The faeries took pity on me because you couldn’t turn that pumpkin into a Scoutarella coach, Paddy...”

ROSIE: “Scout! Bogart! Paddy! Come! Come quickly!”

PADDY: “What is it, Rosie? Are you alright?”

SCOUT: “It sounds like Rosie has found something exciting!”

BOGART: “Oh let’s go and see what it is!”

SCOUT: *Jumps out of campervan and runs around to the back of it, where Rosie is.*

BOGART: *Walks through the cabin of the campervan and peers through a window.*

PADDY: *Follows Scout, intrigued by what Rosie has found.*

ROSIE: “Scout! Bogart! Paddy! Come! Come and see what I found!”

SCOUT and BOGART: “What is it, Rosie?”

PADDY: “What did you find, Rosie?”

ROSIE: “Look everybear! It’s a kitchen!” *Jumps for joy.* “It’s the most important space in the camper van!”

PADDY: “Except the driver’s seat, because you need a driver to steer the camper van.”

ROSIE: “Oh don’t be so literal, Paddy! This is exciting!” *Trembles with excitement.*

BOGART: “Did you find some food for us that the faeries left?”

ROSIE: “Did I ever, Bogart! There is a whole refrigerator full of food!” *Points to refrigerator.* “Fresh fruit and vegetables! Drinks! Frozen food!”

SCOUT: “Cake? Is there cake, Rosie?”

BOGART: “And biscuits, Rosie?”

ROSIE: “Well, I haven’t finished exploring yet, but I’m sure there is!”

SCOUT: “Good! Because I have a very grumbly tummy after driving the camper van! Grumbly tummy, Paddy! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs tummy vigorously.*

BOGART: “Me too, Scout! Being a co-navigator gives you a grumbly tummy! Grumbly tummy, Paddy! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs tummy vigorously.*

ROSIE: “Let me look and see if I can find any cake or biscuits!” *Dives into the refrigerator searching.*

SCOUT: *Squeals with excitement.* “Look! There is an oven too! And we all know that good, yummy things come out of ovens!”

PADDY: “Well just make sure that it is not switched on, Scout! You know that Daddy won’t let us play with the oven at home in case we singe our plush fur!”

SCOUT: “I will be careful, Paddy! I promise! Ooohhh! Look! There is a tap too!” *Excited.*

PADDY: “I’m still not convinced that the faeries left this camper van here for us to find, Scout, Rosie and Bogart.”

ROSIE: *Climbs out of refrigerator.* “What?”

BOGART: *Looks askance at Paddy.* “Surely not!”

SCOUT: “Don’t you believe in the faeries, Paddy?” *Disappointed.*

PADDY: “You know that I know that faeries are real, every bit as much as any of you!”

SCOUT: “Then why don’t you think the faeries have left the camper van for us, Paddy?”

PADDY: “I’m not sure.” *Shrugs.* “I just have this feeling. Besides, we all know that Barbies are a bit careless sometimes and often leave their clothes all over the floor for some poor unsuspecting Mummy or Daddy to step upon and hurt themselves.” *Nods seriously.*

BOGART: “But Barbies are nice, Paddy!”

PADDY: “Oh I didn’t say Barbies weren’t nice. They are very nice and friendly and lovely. It’s just they can be a little remiss with their wardrobes sometimes.”

ROSIE: “Unlike we bears!”

BOGART: “Who always pick up after themselves.”

PADDY: “Well… most of us do!” *Looks meaningfully at Scout, who ignores his stare.*

PADDY: “Scout! Bogart! Rosie!” *Looks around.* “Where are you?”

SCOUT: “Paddy! Paddy!” *Distant.*

*BEEP! BEEP!*

PADDY: “Scout! Scout is that you?”

SCOUT: “Yes! It’s me!” *BEEP! BEEP!* “Rosie, Bogart and me!” *BEEP! BEEP!* “We’re over here!”

PADDY: “Where?”

SCOUT: “Follow the sound of the horn, Paddy! Come and see!” *BEEP! BEEEEP!*

PADDY: *Follows sound of horn honking down the footpath.* “Goodness Scout! You’re in a camper van!”

SCOUT: “Hullo Paddy!” *Leans out of window. And waves enthusiastically.* “I know! And look! It’s pink! My favourite colour! Isn’t it glamorous?” *Strokes camper van’s door lovingly with paw.*

PADDY: “Goodness yes, Scout! It’s very striking!”

BOGART: “And it’s American too!” *Smiles.*

PADDY: “Oh! Hullo Bogart!” *Waves to Bogart.*

BOGART: “Hullo Paddy!” *Waves to Paddy from the passenger seat.*

PADDY: “How do you know its American, Bogart?”

BOGART: “Because the driver sits on the left-hand side!”

SCOUT: *Beeps horn. BEEP! BEEP!*

BOGART: “It’s very comfortable in here.” *Shuffles bottom on seat.*

PADDY: “But where did the campervan come from, Scout and Bogart?”

SCOUT: “Well, since your magic didn’t turn my pumpkin into a Scoutarella coach, Paddy...”

PADDY: “Well, I never actually said I had any magic, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Well, evidently the faeries were listening and they took pity on me, and provided this wonderful pink camper van for us. It was just sitting here under the tree, waiting to be driven.”

PADDY: “But Scout! You don’t know how to drive!” *Alarmed.*

SCOUT: *Oh Paddy!” *Giggles.* “Don’t worry! I will get some help from Daddy. I’ll tell him where to direct the camper van, and he can push it!”

BOGART: “That way we get the best of both worlds, Paddy! We can feel like we are driving, whilst being driven.” *Giggles.* "Think of it like an auto-pilot."

SCOUT: “Why don’t you get in the back with Rosie, Paddy? She is exploring the living areas of the camper van. Apparently, there is a stove, and even a refrigerator!”

BOGART: “Hopefully the faeries continue to provide, and there is food inside it! Grumbly tummy! Paddy! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs tummy vigorously.*

SCOUT: “Grumbly tummy! Paddy! Grumbly tummy!” *Rubs tummy vigorously.*

Paddington, Scout and Other People's Roses

OLEG: "Oh Paddy mijn beste vriend! Spring in Melbourne is truly beautiful!"

PADDY: "Oh I'm so glad you are enjoying our walk, Oleg mijn beste vriend. I wanted to show you how beautiful the gardens are."

OLEG: "It was an excellent idea! Such beautiful flowers." *Stops and sniffs a daisy.*

ROSIE: "Oh yuck!" *Sticks out cute little pink bear tongue.* "That's a cat's pee daisy, Oleg! It stinks!" *Sticks out cute little pink bear tongue again.*

OLEG: "I don't think it smells like that, Rosie."

ROSIE: "I prefer roses, myself. They smell beautiful!"

OLEG: "Yes, your prins Peter loves roses too. Don't you Peter? Peter?" *Looks around.* "Peter? Paddy, where is Peter?"

PADDY: "Oh he's probably with Scout... Scout! Scout has gone missing, and so has Peter!" *Alarmed.* "Rosie! Rosie have you seen Scout or Peter?"

ROSIE: "No I haven't!" *Gasps.* "Oh mijn prins!" *Alarmed.* "Oh where is mijn handsome prins?"

OLEG: "Peter! Peter!"

PADDY: "Scout!"

ROSIE: "Oh mijn prins Peter! Where are you?"

OLEG: "Peter, where are you?"

PADDY: "Scout!"

SCOUT: "What?!?!"

PADDY: "Scout? Scout where are you?"

SCOUT: *Sighs with irritation.* "Look up, Paddy! I'm here with mijn beste vriend, Peter."

PADDY, OLEG and ROSIE: *Look up and see Scout and Peter in a white rose bush.*

ROSIE: "Oh mijn prins! There you are!" *Claps paws in delight.* "Oh! You look so handsome up there, mijn prins!" *Blushes red beneath pink woollen plush.*

PETER: “Hullo mijn liefste prinses Rosie!” *Waves enthusiastically to Rosie.*

ROSIE: "My! How brave you are! Look at all those sharp thorns!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "I hope you didn't prick your paw like Sleeping Beauty!"

PETER: "Fear not, mijn liefste prinses Rosie! Scout mijn beste vriend and I are brave and tenacious bears."

SCOUT: "And light of paw too, Rosie! See, no pricks!" *Holds out paw for Rosie to inspect.*

PADDY: "Scout, what are you and Peter doing up that rose bush?"

PETER: "I am going to pick a perfect white rose for mijn liefste prinses Rosie!"

ROSIE: "Oh mijn prins!" *Blushes red beneath pink woollen plush.* "Thank you! I shall give you 10,000 snuffly kisses when you present me with my rose!"

SCOUT: "And I know Daddy's favourite rose is a white rose, so I am going to pick one for him."

PADDY: "Well that is very admirable, Peter and Scout..."

ROSIE: "Oh it is, mijn handsome prins!"

PADDY: "But you can't just go and pick a white rose from here!"

SCOUT: "Why not, Paddy?" *Grunts and groans and starts tugging on rose stem.*

PETER: "Let me help you, mijn beste vriend!" *Grunts and groans and starts tugging on rose stem too.*

PADDY: "Scout! Peter! Stop that at once!" *Stamps paw and gives Scout and Peter a hard stare.*

PETER and SCOUT: *Stop tugging on rose stem.*

SCOUT: "But why, Paddy? Why do we have to stop? We want to give nice gifts to people we love!"

PETER: "What is wrong with that?"

ROSIE: "Yes, why Paddy?" *Looks disappointedly at Paddy.*

PADDY: “Well, for a start, these are not our flowers. They belong to someone else!”

SCOUT: “So?”

ROSIE: “It’s only a couple of flowers, Paddy. Look at all the other blooms on the white rose bush! There are plenty left!”

OLEG: "They still belong to someone else, Peter and Scout. You can't pick any flowers from there unless you ask the person whose garden it is."

PADDY: “And, you may only be picking one or two, Scout and Peter, but imagine everybear else passing by on a walk, picking just one of two flowers. What will happen then?”

SCOUT: *Gasps.* “Oh! The bush will end up… up...” *Lowers voice.* “Naked, Paddy!” *Gasps and puts paw to mouth.*

PADDY: “Exactly. So, best you don’t pick them.”

ROSIE: “Oh that is so disappointing, Paddy! I was so looking forward to receiving a rose from mijn prins Peter!"

PETER: "And I was hoping pick pretty flowers for mijn prins Peter!” *Disappointed.*

PETER: "And I was hoping to give you one, mijn liefste prinses Rosie!" *Equally disappointed.*

PADDY: “I know Rosie and Peter.” *Consoling.* “But I think I have a solution for all of you!"

PETER, SCOUT, ROSIE and OLEG: "You do, Paddy?"

PADDY: "Yes!"

SCOUT: "You're going to go and knock on the door and ask the owner of the garden if we can pick roses, Paddy?"

PADDY: "No, Scout."

SCOUT: "Oh!" *Disappointed.*

PETER: "You're going to turn your back and not look so we can pick roses for mijn liefste prinses Rosie and Daddy, Paddy?"

OLEG: "Peter! That's naughty!"

PADDY: "No, Peter! Mijn beste vriend Oleg is quite right."

ROSIE: "Then what is the solution, Paddy?"

PADDY: "To go home, back to Daddy's house!" *Smiles.*

SCOUT, PETER and ROSIE: "Go home, Paddy?"

PADDY: "Yes! You know who is the owner of Daddy's garden, don't you, Scout?"

SCOUT: *Scoffs.* "Well of course I do, Paddy! It's Daddy!" *Giggles.*

PADDY: "Well, when we were leaving daddy's house on our walk today, I noticed that his white roses are blooming. There are lots and lots of beautiful flowers. Peter, you can pick a rose for your princess Rosie, and Scout, you can pick a rose for Daddy!"

SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! You are so clever!" *Claps paws.*

ROSIE: "Oh yes you are, Paddy!" *Claps paws too.*

PETER: "What s splendid idea, Paddy!"

PADDY: "Thank you!"

OLEG: "Yes, it is a very good idea, mijn allerbeste vriend, because then, when we get back to Daddy's, we can have a lovely cup of Twinings English Breakfast tea!"

PADDY: "Exactly, mijn allerbeste vriend! Let's go!"

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy Marian Kloon (on and off). Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Paddy and Oleg are very similar and have become best friends too. Peter also loves Rosie and she loves him, so they have become prince and princess to one another. Peter and Oleg are visiting us whilst Mummy Marian does some renovations to her house, and this way, Peter and Oleg can enjoy the spring sunshine here.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). Winter Roses

Although autumn has now well and truly given way to winter here in Melbourne, there is still a great deal of colour around if you remember to take your time, stop and smell the roses, especially on a day like today. Although it is the middle of winter, it was a lovely and sunny day with bright blue skies today: although there was still a definite crispness in the air when the wind blew.

When I took my stroll, I walked past one of my favourite rose bushes, a "Lorraine Lee" which thrives in the original garden of a stylish 1930s Art Deco clinker brick double storey villa. Bathed in gorgeous winter sunshine the pinkish apricot blooms against the azure sky were too beautiful not to photograph.

The "Lorraine Lee" rose was bred by a famous Australian rose breeder named Alister Clark in 1924. It was named after Lorraine Lee, who was born in Melbourne in 1890, and was a cousin of Jessie Clark, Alister’s niece. During the Great War, Lorraine worked in the Women’s Land Army in England and the Ministry of Munitions, earning an MBE for her dedication. In 1920, on a visit to Australia, Alister showed her his unnamed rose seedlings and asked her to choose one. The rose she chose became Alister Clark’s most famous and popular rose "Lorraine Lee".

When I took an afternoon stroll in the spring like sunshine of late August, I walked past one of my favourite rose bushes, a "Lorraine Lee" which thrives in the original garden of a stylish 1930s Art Deco clinker brick double storey villa. Bathed in spring light the pinkish apricot blooms against the azure sky were too beautiful not to photograph.

Although this photo was taken in winter on an unusual sunny day, spring has finally come to Melbourne after a long and grey winter, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours after a wetter than usual winter.

A White Rose - Preston

Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, and we are fortunate enough to have some beautiful big blue sky days as part of the season. On one such day, I took a stroll and saw the last creamy white roses on this bush for this autumn. This shy beauty turning her face away from me was too beautiful not to photograph.

Melbourne has experienced a wonderful Indian summer this year, and as a result, not only are there still plenty of beautiful blooms about, but the Autumnal colours are starting to appear.

A Golden Yellow Rose Reaching for the Sky

I took an afternoon stroll in the spring sunshine the other day, and I walked past a house with a high wall. Appearing above it were some beautiful golden yellow yellow rose blooms. Reaching for the blue sky, and bathed in spring sunshine they were too beautiful not to photograph.

Spring has finally come to Melbourne, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours after a wetter than usual winter.

Today it was a perfect spring day in Melbourne, so I decided to take a walk. My journey took me past a high fence over which I could just see the top of a tall lilac bush.
