Monitoring the track and track bed's condition is a job frequently awarded to PRESS. For this season they've mounted the camera's onto their br228: 118 719. The robust diesel loco offers the structure to get it mounted and most importantly it also offers room inside for the recorders. Which are just a laptop and a NAS these days. During a calm sunday they were scheduled to check near some switches and bridges near the border with The Netherlands. Including near the border cbetween Haanrade and Herzogenrath.
A few photographers gathered at the Haanrade yard with their poles and tripods. A place the loco would never reach of course, but I guess they didn't know. Quite a few people also gathered at Herzogenrath station. I can't imagine a more boring place as the portal for the overhead wires block any view of the surroundings. Going there would be a real shame considering the nice locations the loco would pass this day. So after taking a picture near Palenberg, I went to stand inbetween the mass gathered photographers. I was able to capture the loco awaiting for its return at the border itself and a short few minutes later also as it was about to exit the single track line onto the yard of Herzogenrath station and the mainline between Mönchengladback and Aachen.
