Active Assignment Weekly Nov. 8 - 15: Dramatic Lighting
WIT: I wanted to do a shot of me looking out the window, looking for scary beings while keeping the inside dark so they wouldn't come in. I took this late at night, so the room would be totally dark. Since the light coming from outside would not be strong enough, I had a LED flashlight reflecting on my eye below my cheek. It was hard to get the angle of the eye right and still get what looks like a facial profile, since my eyes are so flat on my face, haha! I also had a small halogen table lamp on the floor facing slightly up to light the window frame a little bit. In Photoshop I brightened the eye and desaturated a bit to get a more eerie atmosphere.
light a candle
for the old man who sits staring
out a frosty windowpane
light a candle
for the woman who is lonely
and every Christmas it's the same
for the children who need more than presents can bring
light a candle
light the dark
light the world
light a heart or two
light a candle for me
I'll light a candle for you
light a candle
for the homeless and the hungry
a little shelter from the cold
light a candle
for the broken and forgotten
may the season warm their souls
can we open our hearts to shine through the dark?
light a candle
light the dark
light the world
light a heart or two
light a candle for me
I'll light a candle for you
and in this special time of year
may peace on earth surround us here
and teach us there's a better way to live
and with every flame that burns
we must somehow learn
that loves the greatest gift
that we could ever give.....
light a candle
light the dark
light the world
light a heart or two
light a candle for me
I'll light a candle for you

Couldn't resist taking a shot or two of this beautiful orangy-red Painbrush with orange Lichen growing on the rock in the background. Saw this on Saturday, when three of us went on the amazing hike to Gunnery Pass. Usually, my Paintbrush photos have a dark green background of leaves, so I thought it would be fun to shoot it differently this time. A rather messy photo, but different : ) Love the way there are so many colours of Paintbrush, from yellow, to almost white, bright red to deep red, pink to salmon. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this wildflower, the bracts are red and the flowers are green with red tips.
"This is probably a reddish morph of C. rhexiifolia (usually crimson to purplish but sometimes to look like C. miniata...)" Thanks to Mark Egger for this ID!

Have you ever noticed a tree standing naked against the sky,
How beautiful it is?
All its branches are outlined, and in its nakedness
There is a poem, there is a song.
Every leaf is gone and it is waiting for the spring.
When the spring comes, it again fills the tree with
The music of many leaves,
Which in due season fall and are blown away.
And this is the way of life.
(Krishnamurti)
A Flickr friend is mourning her mother. Her mum left, quietly, just like a dry leaf eventually falls off the tree. She's gone; but she's only gone a bit further; her light is still shining - for her children, beloved ones, who miss her. She doesn't need the world any longer; she is quite happy where she is now. But we, who are still around, have to get to grips with the empty space, with no longer having our mother, our father, our brother and/or sister, our lover with us. .... This is the way of life.
Dear K., you're in my thoughts and prayers. After the pain it will get better again. As sure as this tree will make new leaves and flowers, when the season is coming for new leaves and flowers!
Love!

I guess everybody would agree, after the olympic games, that the bear that Napoleon spoke of, is today completely awake. Not only it is this value, being awake, but gradually being more self conscious what gives an inner strength.
Supongo que todos estarán de acuerdo, después de los juegos olímpicos, que el oso del que Napoleón habló, está hoy completamente despierto. No sólo es este valor, sino el ser cada vez más consciente de sí mismo, que da una fuerza interior.
