"Stilt Wing Water Dip" by Patti Deters. Picture a quiet morning by the water, where the delicate flutter of wings breaks the silence, and the day starts to awaken. This Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) glides effortlessly above the water, its one wing tip just barely breaking the surface of the water. The water is so still that the bird's reflection is almost perfect in the mirror-like surface. This particular bird was seen at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas, USA which is near Mustang Island and is on the Great Texas Birding Trail. While exploring this abandoned vacation center, I was struck by this lone chair perched on the edge of a concrete balcony. It seemed to be waiting for a guest who would never return.
I chose to shoot this in black and white to emphasize the stark contrast between the rough concrete texture and the dark void surrounding it. The minimalist composition with just these few elements tells a more powerful story than a wider shot showing more decay would have.
The curved concrete ledge creates this natural line that leads to the chair, which becomes an unexpected focal point - a human element in this otherwise cold, brutalist structure. I found something both eerie and poetic about this simple piece of furniture that once served holidaymakers, now sitting in isolation against the emptiness.
What fascinates me about photographing abandoned places is capturing these quiet moments where everyday objects take on new meaning when their context changes. This chair isn't just furniture anymore - it's become a monument to absence and the passage of time.
The space between thoughts is like a little mental breather—a moment where your mind pauses and everything feels calm for once. It’s not about zoning out or going blank, but about letting the noise settle so you can really be in the moment. In that gap, life feels a bit clearer, almost like the world’s hitting the "refresh" button. It’s where creativity can sneak in, ideas can start taking shape, or you can just enjoy the simplicity of being still.
These pauses can be surprisingly powerful. It’s like the quiet moment in a song where the melody takes a breath—soft, but super important. It’s not about rushing to the next thought or solving a problem; it’s about soaking in that moment and letting your mind wander, reflect, or rest. It's kind of like finding a little oasis in the middle of life’s chaos—a chance to just breathe and be.
