Al zowat een eeuw is deze monumentale kolos van architect Karel de Bazel beeldbepalend in het midden van de Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam. Het gebouw was achtereenvolgens hoofdkantoor van de Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij, de Algemene Bank Nederland en - na de fusie - ABN-Amro. Na het vertrek van de bank naar de Zuidas is hier het Stadsarchief gevestigd. Sindsdien heet het gebouw naar zijn architect: 'De Bazel'.

Al die tijd (uitgezonderd de recente vernieuwing van de Vijzelstraatbruggen) had het gebouw de tram voor de deur - tot vandaag

This monumental building, designed by Karel de Bazel, dominates the central part of Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam for almost a century. It was built as headquarters of a trading company; now the municipal archives are housed in it.

All the time the building has seen trams passing by - until today. As a saving measure, this part of route 24 is cut off, with a new terminus at Frederiksplein

Housed in a building called De Bazel, after Dutch architect Karel de Bazel. It was built from 1919 to 1926 as the head office of the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij.
De Bazel died before the building was finished.
